There are five Sunnah of the adhaan
1. Person hearing the adhaan repeats what the mu'adhadhin says, except "hayya alas salaah, hayya alal falaah" instead he says "laa hawla walaa quwwata illa billah"
Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri: Allah's Apostle said, "Whenever you hear the Adhan, say what the Mu'adhdhin is saying. (Bukhari)
Narrated Yahya as: "Some of my companions told me that Hisham had said, "When the Mu'adhdhin said, "Haiya alas-sala(t) (come for the prayer)." Muawiya said, "La hawla wala quwata illa billah (There is neither might nor any power except with Allah)" and added, "We heard your Prophet saying the same." (Bukhari)
2. The person hearing the adhaan should say:
"ash shahadu alla ilaha illaha wahdahu laa shareekalahu wa anna muhammadan abduhu wa rasooluhu radhitu billahi rabban wabi muhammadin rasoolan wabi islami deenan"
Sa'd b. Abu Waqqas reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: If anyone says on hearing the Mu'adhdhin: I testify that there is no god but Allah alone. Who has no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger, (and that) I am satisfied with Allah as my Lord, with Muhammad as Messenger. and with Islam as deen (code of life), his sins would be forgiven. In the narration transmitted by Ibn Rumh the words are:" He who said on hearing the Mu'adhdhin and verily I testify." ' Qutaiba has not mentioned his words:" And I."(Muslim)
3. The the person should send salaah on the Prophet
'Abdullah b. Amr b. al-As reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: When you hear the Mu'adhdhin, repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me, for everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allah; then beg from Allah al-Wasila for me, which is a rank in Paradise fitting for only one of Allah's servants, and I hope that I may be that one. If anyone who asks that I be given the Wasila, he will be assured of my intercession.(Muslim)
4. After hearing the adhaan recite the following dua
'Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-d-da' watit-tammati was-salatil qa'imati, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilata, wab' athhu maqaman mahmudan-il-ladhi wa' adtahu
Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah:
Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever after listening to the Adhan says, 'Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-d-da' watit-tammati was-salatil qa'imati, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilata, wab' athhu maqaman mahmudan-il-ladhi wa' adtahu (O Allah! Lord of this perfect call (of not ascribing partners to You) and of the regular prayer which is going to be established! Kindly give Muhammad the right of intercession and superiority and send him (on the Day of Judgment) to the best and the highest place in Paradise which You promised him)', then intercession for me will be permitted for him on the Day of Resurrection"). [Bukhari]
5. Finally, supplicate to Allah asking for His bounty
Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-'As:
A man said: Apostle of Allah, the mu'adhdhins excel us. The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: Say (the same words) as they say, and when you come to the end, make a petition and that will be granted to you. [Abu Dawood]
