Schools of Tafsir:

The most notable centres of Tafsir which evolved during this period were those of Makkah, Madinah and ‘Iraq.

In Makkah, the tafsir school ibn ‘Abbas became the most prominent. ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (RA) was considered to be the greatest tafsir scholar amongst the Sahabah. The most famous of his students’ were: Mujahid ibn Jabr, ‘Ikrimah (the freed slave of Ibn ‘Abbas), Sa’id ibn Jubayr, Tawoos ibn Kisan al-Yamani and ‘Ata ibn Abi Rabah. The interesting thing to note is that they all were former slaves. ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (RA) was also a great scholar amongst the Sahabah who was given the title “Tarjuman al-Qur’an” (Translator of the Qur’an) [This is mentioned in al-Hakim’s book]

In Madinah, the most noted school of Tafsir was that of Ubayy ibn Ka’b (RA), who was considered to be as the top reader of Qur’an. He was also the first person chosen by the Prophet to record the revelation of the Qur’an. His students included Zayd ibn Aslam, Abu al-‘Aliyah and Muhammad ibn Ka’b al-Quradhi.

In Iraq, Ibn Mas’ud (RA) headed the most prominent school of tafsir. Amongst the students of Ibn Mas’ud were Hasan al-Basri, ‘Alqamah ibn Qays, al-Aswad ibn Yazid and ‘Amir ash-Sha’bi.
