How do you shake the hand of your brother if you are a brother, and how do you shake the hand of your sister if you are a sister?
I've seen some people who do a one hand handshake, I've seen some people who do a two hand handshake. some even raise their right hand and put it on their chest after the handshake.
Which way is preferred? Which way is recommended? Any hadith on this matter on how the prophet used to shake the hand of the people around him?

I shake with one hand, but if I am far off from the brother than I raise my hand to my chest. I know thats weird, but it goes there automatically. :embar:

I know what you mean!
But I do the 2 handed handshake + hand to the chest. All my friends did it, so I started too. Felt weird being the only one doing a single handed handshake with no hand to the chest. Which is why I started.
But today I thought, "I wonder if there is a hadith about this"...

What on earth is a two handed handshake? Sounds bendy lol
I don't shake hands with anyone, but I am very very shy, and don't like people to get close enough to shake a hand anyway.

As it says in Saheeh al-Bukhaari (6265) and Saheeh Muslim (402) that Ibn Masâood (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught me the tashahhud, holding my hand between both of his.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon Him) took the hand of one of his companions in both of his hands as a sign of extra care in teaching, and guiding. Saheeh al-Bukhaari and Saheeh Muslim.
It was narrated from Hammaad ibn Zayd that he shook hands with âAbd-Allaah ibn al-Mubaarak using both hands, as is stated in a muâallaq report in Saheeh al-Bukhaari (p. 1206).

Greetings, and a question of my own ... Some muslim women prefer not to shake hands with men. Is there an acceptable substitute?

Yes you shouldn't because on the palm of a woman there is love. :D
Sure don't shake hands with Non - Mehrams and if you have to just explain that you can't in your religion. :D

So the last time a girlfriend slapped me, she was delivering love? Funny how it didn't look that way in her eyes. I guess I should try to be more observant. That, or learn to duck faster.
I understand that it might, or even probably, have to be explained, but what gets substituted then? A bow or something?

You should never give a woman a chance to slap you.
You don't bow to anyone but Allah. :nono:

I've been in that situation a gazillion times and I alwayz explain that I can't do it because of my religion and they understand. :D

I can't find it in there either.
"No. (I swear) by Allah, the hand of the prophet, peace be upon him, never touched the hand of any woman; instead they would give their oath of allegiance with words only."
And Ayesha said: 'By Allah, the prophet, peace be upon him, only took the oath of allegiance from the women in the manner prescribed by Allah, and the hand of the prophet, peace be upon him, never touched the hand of any woman. When he had received their oath of loyalty and allegiance he would say, 'I have accepted your oath of allegiance verbally."
[Sahih Muslim, #1866]
Umaymah bint Raqeeqah said: 'The prophet, peace be upon him, said, "I do not shake hands with women (not permissible to touch)."
[An-Nasaai, #4181 and Ibn Majah, #2874; Al Jami, #2513]
These are not from that website. :o Will look again tomorrow Insha Allah ~ have to get ready for iftaar. :D

lol^ man thinks hes in the mafia:)
It's the pinnacle of disrespect to use one hand in Afghanistan, especially with an elder. In the court of Mahmud Ghaznawi, you were prohibited from turning your face from the throne. Kissing the hands are also a required feature in Afghan culture, as it is in many others.

Gotta work on ducking faster, then.
You don't bow to anyone but Allah. :nono:
Bowing is part of just about everyone's culture, running from country square-dancing — "Bow to your partners and do-si-do" — to formal Japanese politeness where it's something of an artform.
I like square-dancing, but I'm awful at it. Some people have two left feet. I think I was born with three.
There is no substitute as long as I know. :o
I got a rep comment that says a hand placed on your chest is used instead. Sounds like a bold plan to me.
I've been in that situation a gazillion times and I alwayz explain that I can't do it because of my religion and they understand. :D
I think some kind of non-contact gesture would be better. You can't refuse a courtesy without appearing discourteous, but if you substitute another one, everybody goes away happy.
IMHO, of course. Thanks for your answers.

If a male was greeting a female he would just say "Assalamu alaikum" without any physical contact wouldn't he?
Peace.

depends whose hand im shaking, i have picked up which people preffer which handshake... some preffer hug.
Usual ethnicity helps in telling you how a person greets another.
