This is for the Hafiz and for the one who is studying towards reaching that rank. It is a list of the Mutashabihat of the Holy Quran. The word Mutashabihat is used here in the sense understood by the Huffaz, and not in the manner understood in the science of Ulum al-Quran. An ayah which closely resembles another one is called a Mutashabih. It is very tempting for the one who is memorising the Quran to ignore these ayat and to overlook them. But if he truly wants to know the Quran well, then it is imperative that he know which ayat are similar to other ones and the differences between them as well as where these ayat are to be found in the Quran, because it is said that the excellence of ones memorisation will be according to the excellence of ones knowledge of the Mutashabihat. The aim of this list is to assist in that endeavour. My advice would be to use this list to identify which ayat are regarded as Mutashabihat and then next to those ayat, pencil in the reference for the other ayat which are similar to it in the margin of your mushaf. May Allah (swt) make it easy for all the students of Hifz and may He increase the Huffaz in their knowledge of the Quran, Ameen.

Any feedback would be much appreciated.
Also please note that the list is not complete. I might have either missed some out or left it out intentionally.

Update: al-Juz al-Thaani - the second Juz. There are few mutashabihat which are self-contained within the Juz which I left out. Also added one more to the first Juz which I seemed to have omitted first time round.

Are you doing this yourself? I tihnk its a very good idea and if you inshaALLAH complete it for entire Quran then you should consider publishing. I dont know if there's anything similar available or not but its very useful.

Wa iyyaakum. Yeah, I'm doing it myself and the thought of publishing did cross my mind. Somebody on this board once linked to a Muslim publishing firm which had an authors area which accepted book proposals. I contacted them, they said they thought it was a good idea but weren't looking to publish something like this at the moment. Suggested I try and look elsewhere. The few other Muslim firms I did find online didn't reply. Ah well.

There is a list of tips for memorising the Quran which is quite popular online. The writer mentions the Mutashabihat and then refers the reader to two books. But I couldn't find any more info about them so I dunno if they're around or not. Here's the relevant part from that list:

Being Aware of the Resembling Parts of the Quran

The various parts of the Quran resemble each other with respect to the meaning, wording and (repetition of) verses. The Exalted said:

Allah has sent down the most beautiful of speech, a Book, (parts of it) resembling (others) oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it. Then their skins and their hearts soften to the remembrance of Allah [Zumar 39:23].

The Quran has approximately six and a half-thousand verses. And there are approximately a thousand verses in which there is a resemblance of some sort. Sometimes there is agreement or difference due to a single letter or a word or two or more. For this reason it is necessary for the good reciter of the Quran that he has special concern for the parts of the Quran that resemble each other in terms of their wording. The excellence of ones memorisation will be according to the extent that one has concern for these resembling parts. One of the ways to aid oneself in this matter is to study those books which deal with this topic of resembling verses in the Quran.
Among the most famous of them are:

1. Durratul-Tanzeel wa Ghurratut-Ta'weel fee Bayaan il Aayaat al-Mutashaabihaat fee Kitaab il-Laahi il-Azeez by al-Khateeb al-Iskaafee

2. Asraar ut-Tukraar fil-Quran by Mahmood bin Hamzah ibn Nasr al-Kirmaanee.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I changed the way I'm doing it slightly. Trying to make it so that you can pick any ayat of the Holy Quran, look it up on the list, and find all the other ayat which are similar to it or have a resemblance to it in some way. So maybe non-Huffaz could also have some use for it. That's why there is a lot of repetition and makes it look as if there are more mutashabihat than there actually are.
