SACC Planning Meeting (Glasgow) - Oppose New "Anti-Terror" Laws
Date:Tuesday 2 October
Time:7.30pm
Venue: Quaker Meeting Meeting House, 38 Elmbank Crescent, Glasgow G2 4PS nearest underground - Charing Cross
All supporters, members and friends of SACC welcome. Come along and help our campaign to block yet more 'anti-terrorism' measures
New measures are expected to be put before Parliament very soon in a new "Terrorism Bill." The measures continue a trend beginning with the terrorism Act 2000, whose broad definition of terrorism criminalised many kinds of political activity, including activities that don't include violence against the person, and made even the suspicion of association with such activities a criminal offence.
The proposed new measures include the power to detain 'terror suspects' without charge for up to 56 days (double the current 28-day limit), post-charge questioning, and more severe sentences for any 'terrorist-related' crime. Also proposed is a new criminal offence of seeking information which could be useful for terrorism, whether or not the seeker intends such a use. For mere suspicion of involvement in terrorism, anyone could face travel restrictions and be deprived of their passport.
A UK-wide campaign is bringing together many organisations which defend civil society against the politics of fear and insecurity unleashed by 'anti-terror' laws. Organisations supporting the campaign include:
Peace and Progress, Scotland Against Criminalising Communities (SACC) and the Campaign Against Criminalising Communities (CAMPACC); Stop the War Coalition; Cage prisoners; Index on Censorship; Campaign against Racism and Fascism (CARF); Institute of Policy Research and Development; Kurdish Federation UK; London Guantanamo Campaign; Muslim Parliament; Tamil centre for Human Rights; Campaign for Truth and Justice ; Islamic Human Rights Commission(IHRC); Peace and Justice in East London; Centre of the Study of Terrorism.
Please come along on Tuesday evening and find out how you can help us mobilise for this campaign in Glasgow.
We'll be discussing arrangments for a public meeting in Glasgow in early November, and ways to persuade our MPs to vote against legislation like this.
