Showkat
28-09-07, 05:08 PM
Date: Saturday 6th October 2007 (Date change)
Time: 5.00 pm - 8.00 pm (Iftar is at 6.30pm)
Venue: Froud Centre, 1 Toronto Avenue, off Romford Road, Manor Park,
London, E12 5JF
Polish people have travelled to Britain throughout the centuries
for a variety of reasons. However, it was not until the First
World War that Poles settled in large numbers in London. During
the Second World War many Polish people arrived in the UK as
political emigrants. Following Poland's entry into the European
Union, there has been another wave of migration from Poland over
the past few years. Amongst those who have come, some have chosen
Islam as their way of life whilst others are descendants of Muslim
Tatars who settled in Eastern Europe in the 14th century. Today
there are some 30,000 Muslims living in Poland of whom a fifth
are ethnically Polish.
Join us for a special iftar evening with Polish food and learn
more about the history of Islam in Poland. There will be a talk
in Polish and an opportunity to listen to the experiences of
Polish Muslims. All Polish people are invited to attend.
Admission is free for people from Poland and other Eastern
European countries. Muslims of Arab, African or South Asian
origin may attend provided that they bring a non-Muslim Polish
person with them. Participants are also requested to bring a
simple dish to share with others at iftar. This is a unique
opportunity to engage with a small yet steadily growing
community who have largely been neglected by the more
established Muslim communities living in the UK.
Please note that born Muslim brothers and sisters who wish
to come for the purpose of finding a revert for marriage
need not attend.

 its completely outreageous, bit like i dont get invited to the eid celebration or prayers because im neither asian nor a doctor, may Allah guide this ummah amin!! just cos they feel neglected by the non polish muslims doesnt mean they can start segregating themselves off into their own little thing too. seriously this type of nationalisim from a simple iftar to marriage is rife in this ummah and it is pure jahil.

Because I'm not Muslim, I wasn't going to say anything about this, but even I, too, noticed it.
I thought the prohibitions for this event sounded kinda snarky, esp. that bit about "don't come here looking for a revert to marry."
Very weird attitude. Esp. given the "sprit of Ramadan" and all.

its terrible cashew, and it breaks my heart to see such things from muslims who really should know so much better than this :( subhanAllah the muslims have had 1400 years to get over this nationalistic mentality.

Aw, geez. Don't feel that bad about it. People are people. And it seems that sometimes when people have an explicit rule against doing something, they're all the more tempted to go ahead and do it.
You gotta admit that it some ways it's kinda funny. It's not as if Polish Muslims were exactly famous.
How many Muslims heard about this shindig and thought, "OH, BOY! I'm gonna go and find a revert to marry!!!"?

yes ur right i dont know why they would think people would rush to the event to find a polish revert husband or wife specifically , i know british passports are always popular but i didnt know polish ones were so sought after too
but it is really sad for me to see muslims thinking so nationalistically.

I suppose the polish experience something similar to the West Indies Indian community, which doesn't really get recognized by "Indian Indians" or other desis. They feel left out, so this whole thing is a way for them to create a sense of community from within. It doesn't justify the exclusionist attitude which is particularly distasteful in Ramadan, but sort of explains it.

I think they ask Non Polish Muslim’s to bring a Non Muslim Pole with them because of dawah but not the right way to go about it, anyway I know about 10 Polish Muslim and there food is nice, nice people
Sorry to say but I kind of agree with them about the marriage part, I dont believe I would like it at all if in the middle of breaking my fast, some random person comes and asks me if i'm interested in marriage. There is absolutley no need to turn every event into a marriage/or seeking marriage event. Its an iftar dinner and should remain an iftar dinner not a marriage dinner. Theres no need to get upset or angry about it because surely you wouldnt like it espicially you girls if some person comes up to you and asks you dodgy questions.
About the rest well-it is strange that they would only invite a few select groups but we should spare judgement as this could be a mistake. Allah asks us to verify things and so we should, all you people complaining about racism and what not could have easily picked up the phone and called them and asked them what the deal was.

I just think it would have been nice worded differently. Does it mean that reverts can come looking for marriage?
It should say something like:
Note: This is not a marriage-focussed event. Please do not come for the purpose of finding a marriage partner.
Without being selective or segregatory.
I think it is fair to be selective because the event is free and food is provided. It is nice to involve everyone, but then again it is in Polish. By inviting everyone it would have been a much more pleasant event, and it is us who aren't polish who have a lot more to learn about Islam in Poland.
I hope it went well.
May Allah unite our hearts as a strong Ummah. Ameen.
