I need to find out what the wep key is for my computer's wireless network. I used to have it written down but in the chaos of kids moving in and things getting shifted around I have lost it. I remember that there is a notepad document stored somewhere in my comp that has it but I can't remember where it is. Anyone have any ideas?
It's a D-link DSL-604+ router

1. Somebody here could probably help you crack it. I'm not into that sort of thing for various reasons, but I think other people here can help.

2. I don't know exactly how to do this in Windows, but I imagine you can search for notepad documents with a very short length. You shouldn't have too many of those. If you do, you can add a date range to your search if you remember roughly when you made that file.

3. You could hard reset the router and reconfigure it with a new key.

I am hesitating to reset the key because I just spent several hours on the phone today with the tech guys at my ISP trying to get hooked up. My kids tried networking another computer in and messed up the settings

OK. Well, there aren't very many setting that are relevant to the ISP. So you could just print those screens and restore those settings later.

Some routers will allow you to save those setting, create a new profile and then you can copy those few settings back. So you don't have to reset in that case, and you can go right back to where you are now in case something goes wrong.

Did you try the search for the notepad file?

yeah I did but no luck. My one daughter said that she has the paper with the wep key because she used to use the network when her friend came over with her notebook so she just has to find it.

If you can get into the admin panel then you can get the WEP key. If you can't then you need to hard reset the router (usually by holding down the reset button for 10 - 30 seconds).
