Yeah. You can just sense it, or it's a coincidence.

As-salaamu 'Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaah,
I hate knowing that someone is staring at me. It is umcomfortable because you know before you turn around that it is happening. I do not know how that is possible but yea, it happens to me all the time. I dont like it.
Another thing with me is that if anyone were to say my name, I can hear it. I will hear the mention of my name even if people do not want me to hear it. I just think my ears are sensitive to the sounds of my name but I have been known as the weird one in the familiy.

ibnS *sighs* this has never happened to me..and frankly if people want to stare at the back of my head then they can...when i turn around they aint going to see much else as i wear niqaab :p
have to say im a bit oblivious to the world when i go out...like when me and hubs in car and he's like 'ooooh what a nice car' and im like 'where? which one?' by the time im awake and alert to the world the car is waay past us....so even if someone was staring at me...i wouldnt know :p

Maybe. Or it's just an ability all humans have, you just know some things. Kinda amazing.
Or.
It could just be a mystery. Like many other things in this life.

This happens to me all the time while I'm driving... but the embarrasing this is that I am usually the starer...
It's not that I mean to stare people but I am one of those heads-in-the-clouds people, always deep in tought and sometimes my eye's just land on someone and I don't realize I am staring at them until they turn around and meet my eye. :o
But this never happens that I am staring at the back of someone's head and they turn around... it is more like staring from the side and they are looking straight ahead...
I have always thought that the way this works is that your subconscious mind sees them looking at you (or turned in ur direction) from ur peripheral vision.

That happens to me alot! It's very embarrassing! I then mutter something under my breath and proceed to make a quick escape.
Ha ha iv had that a few times ur waliking away and all of a sudden u realise sum1z looking @ u but u have no-idea how u know...bit ;wacko: but 1 of life'z weird happeningz i suppose...

Your peripheral vision senses that someone is staring at you, there's no science behind it.
I know what you mean though, sometimes it's a scary feeling :nervous:

Your peripheral vision can't let you see behind you, can it? Nope, because it covers just the sight of a 180 degree angle slightly, it being stronger at night than daylight.

Ok there smarty pants, i said sense, i never said that allows you to see behind your back. Some people i say :smack:
i find that anties really stare.. its so annoying
especially this one anty who just goes on staring at me. i feel like shes analyzing every single cell of mine
how does peripheral vision allow you to 'sense' something if its not in your line of vision?
maybe the angels/jinns that are with us make us concious of it

Yeah it's kinda scary.. you'd assume this sixth sense would sometimes be wrong, but everytime i get the feeling, somebody really is staring at me!
But I usually try not to meet their gaze directly, it's kinda awkward :o
If i'm in a bad mood I stare right back though.
She's probably a robot :rotfl:
ya... a person robot

Wow, I have always said that if someone happens to stare at me out of ignorance, I will always stare right back or even crack a smile at them but I have never been able to. I always shy away and stare at my feet or hands. :(

How would you know whether that stare was out of ignorance when you shy away and start showing your newly generated interest in your feet or hands?

Its called a 'cold' or 'mean' look. You tend to get plenty of those living in the States.
Come and try it out.
Plus, if its a Muslim person, you just automatically lower the gaze even if they have been staring for a while. If an older woman happens to, you start running in the opposite direction because you know what they are thinking.

im sure i read a hadith about one of the sahaba saying that Rasoolullah:saw: never met him AFTER he accepted Islam but that he met him with a smile, which kind of implies that beforehand that wasnt the case, i dunno if that means we should never smile at kuffaar, just thought it was worth mentioning.
It does happen a lot on the train. You think someone's staring at you - you look back at them just to make sure - you realise they weren't staring - then suddenly BAM they look up and notice you looking. Very embarassing!

I didnt mean to return the same dirty look that an ignorant person gives me. I actually want to smile at them when they try to offend me but that is when I shy away. If it doesnt embarrass them being treated nicely after their rudeness, it will show them that Muslims actually have a heart too.
Btw- If you can find that hadeeth please do post it, Insha-Allaah.

What's so embarassing?
I think women have every right to be aware of their surroundings, and if they are looking at people around them, it's perfectly normal.
Actually eye-contact is something of a taboo. I've read Corporate Dossiers which claim that an interviewee who maintains an "uncomfortable" eye-contact is hiding something or presenting something wrong in his/her CV. Now who decides what is "uncomfortable"? Embarassment?

Assalamu Alaikum,
Not too sure, but do you mean this hadith Akhy?:
Jareer ibn Abdullah Al-Bujali says: “The Prophet never kept me waiting since I embraced Islam. Whenever he saw me, he smiled. I complained to him that I could not be stable on horseback. He struck his hand on my chest and prayed: ‘My Lord! Give him stability and endow him with guidance so as to guide others aright.’”
(Related by Al-Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmad, Al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah).
