Ramadan is the promise of what Islam should be. Above all else, it is the unadulterated reverence and worship of God that seeks to glorify Him, and not our selves.
"Verily! We have sent it (this Qur'an) down in the Night of Decree (Lailatul-Qadr). And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rûh, [i.e. Jibra'íl (as)] by Allah's Permission with all Decrees. Peace! until the appearance of dawn." [97:1-5]
Abu Hurairah reported that the Prophet (saw) said " .. There is a night (during this month), which is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of its good is indeed deprived (of something great). [Ahmad, Nisa'i and Bayhaqi]
The Night of Power (Layla al-Qadr) is the very climax of Ramadan. Good deeds performed on that single night are equal to those performed over a thousand months. Some commentators believe it was the night when the Qur’an was brought down from the Baytul Ma'mûr (Heavenly abode), for Jibra’íl to reveal in parts to the Prophet (saw). Others say it was the night when the Prophet received the entire Qur’an, but was asked to transmit it as and when the occasion demanded.
The following questions often arise:
* What should I do, i.e. are their any special prayers, specific dua or actions that one should do?
* What is I'tikâf (seclusion)? What is the purpose? Are there any rules?
* Can women do it? Can I do i'tikâf it at home?
* When is Laylatul-Qadr? Why do most people do it on the 27th night of Ramadan?
* What are the signs of Laylatul-Qadr? Are there signs?
