I have done Arabic BA 2 yrs and transferred to Arabic Cultural Studies BA for third yr. It sounds like something pretty much the same. Where is that course Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies? Manchester, Leeds or somewhere else?

Al-Irhaab, is there any way that you could visit these programs before enrolling?

Course descriptions are often misleading. You really need to get a feel for the instructors, the students, etc.

Manchester if u are going, try to learn some Arabic before hand because they give a placement test. If u passed this placement test u can start the degree on a more advanced level and so progress quicker and learn more, or if u are in between the two groups they will fit the units specifically for u... or for me they offered to do that anyway but then I didnt go in the end.

How much u learn in the course depends on how much effort u are willing to put to be honest, people come out with a good level and people come out with a very poor level, it is down to you. For brothers it is easier because u can go for ur year abroad without ne difficulty and that will seriously help u out. This is where my course was a problem cos I couldnt go and that really hindered me, i would have been alot better if i went but i wasn't able. If you dont go abroad I dont think you will come properly fluent, but if you are able and u fulfil that year then its quite likely u could get a close to fluent level if u try ur real upmost from start of the course til that time.

Look at the courses what they are exactly cos some are not so much language units, more forcing u to do literature or history of middle east but studying it in the English language. That has some benefits but not all that much.

the course is not actually for me... im wayyyyyy too old to go back to uni...if a woman does this course and she doesnt want to go abroad for the year wot at her options?

Depends on the uni's specific regulations but they will exempt her only normally for the following reasons:
very bad illness which prevents going
pregnancy or having children to look after
being a carer of an ill person
but these three things can not have been the case before joining the course. only if they happen while u have started , before the yr abroad.
If not then what they might do is let u change to another similiar course without the abroad requirment so u can complete 2 yrs in the arabic degree then final in arabic culture like i did.
Manchester may be more lenient and say like those who cant go cos theyr married wit commitments, or who doesnt want to go without a mahram, they dnt have to go. You should contact the department and find what is the policy these days, because they do change it (it seems trend is that they are become more stricter in forcing ppl 2 go?)
