Hands for some things, however, fork for just about all other foods and sometimes also a knife and spoon with it too. I mean you cant eat soup with your fingers:p In ramadan everyday we have soup.

Hands lol.
I meant if I am eating stuff like spaghetti bolognese or pasta with sauce then I use fork.
I've now started to eat that with my hands too... Try it, it's good!
One more thing, try using your first three fingers (so thumb, index and middle finger) only and also lick the remaining food off your fingers when you're done.

Khanjee is what we eat in Sri Lanka (since i know baba's from SL then i know what you mean) and haleem is more brownish than khanjee and not so thick i don't think - more like a broth...

I dont know about the Indian/Pakistani Haleem, but the Afghan Haleem and the Arab Harees are the same thing.
It is made quiet plain, in the sense that there is not many spices in it other than cinnamon.
It is made from wheat, meat or chicken, and a bit of salt. Some people put olive oil in it as well.
Wheat is soaked overnight. Harees is prepared by boiling the meat after it has been washed and cleaned from whites and fat. Then mixing the meat and the softened wheat. Then place the mixture on constant heat until it is cooked. When cooked the liquid remaining is strained and salt is added and the entire mixture is beaten on low heat. When ready, the mixture is poured into a serving pot and the surface is covered with cinnamon and sugar and some people pour hot olive oil on it as well.
In the old way, they never drained the water, they would cook the meat and wheat slowly, until it all just blended into like a thick cream. It could take up to a day to cook in the old way. That preserves all the nutrients, and it is very powerful. There is a hadith about it as well if i remember correctly.

Just break the meat off using your fingers.
Just break the meat off using your fingers.
I dont think you can do that. Steak doesnt break apart. The only way is to pick up the whole thing (6, 8, 10 or 12 OZ of it) and rip a piece off with your teeth. Who eats a steak like that? Try doing that at a business meeting or on a date with your wife at a fancy restaurant. lol
I think it would be permissible to use utensils in that case.
Anyone got any evidence to counter this?

The story of Hadhrat Hudhayfah radhiallahu anhu when he went to meet with some 'nobels' of the kuffaar, and he dropped a piece of meat on the floor, and then picked it up to dust it off and his partner that was with him said maybe he shouldn't do it because they're by royals, so Hadhrat Hudhayfah radhiallahu anhu replied, "should i abandon the sunnah of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam (by not picking it up and dusting it off) for these people?"
Well that's paraphrased anyway, if anyone has the full story they can post it.

Well if its roti with anything its gonna be hands aint it ! that includes chicken and chips.
Knife and fork:
pilau rice with gosht and chicken,
Biryaani,
English frozen foods, chips fish, veggies etc.
Fish and chips from the fish and chip shop, cant stand the oiliness of it !
Just break the meat off using your fingers.
aye it's 1000 times better than ripping it off with a fork and knife, not to mention tastes much more yummylicious

Interesting! Thanks! Do you know what book is this in that I can look it up? I've heard something to this effect before but never read it.
Hey... look what I found!
Abu Dawud
Book 21, Number 3769:
Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin:
The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) said: Do not eat meat with a knife, for it is a foreign practice, but bite it, for it is more beneficial and wholesome.
Book 21, Number 3810:
Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) was brought a piece of cheese in Tabuk. He called for a knife, mentioned Allah's name and cut it.

What does it mean by 'for it is a foreign practice'? Lots of things would be foreign to the Prophet, saws, esp in this day and time.
I'd rather eat with a fork or spoon, rather than my hands. Unless it's a finger food. It's less messy. I've seen people trying to eat rice and all with their hands, and it ends up all over the place.

Notice that it says cut it.
I guess one would use a knife anyway to cut up foods.
I myself prefer to eat rice, curries (with roti), halwa using my fingers.
When eating something thats liquidy eg; kheer, soup, ice cream then obviously using a spoon would be more appropriate.

You don't need to pick the whole lot up. Just slice it up into pieces as you would using your knife and fork, but eat it using your fingers.
Deen is simple, and we can get great rewards for even the simplest of acts. All you gotta do is change your intentions and adhere the Sunnah methods, for example; A person feels thirsty, and gulps down a glass of water whilst standing and holding the glass in his left hand, without mentioning anything before/in between/after drinking..... then his thirst will be quenched, but less chance of rewards.
But if the person sits down, says Bismillah, drinks with the glass in his right hand, drinks in 2/3 sips and says Alhamdulillah thereafter... then he has revived at least 5 Sunnah's of the beloved Rasulullah :saw:.

I just cook my rice a little longer so that way it's sticky and I can pick it up with bread.:D I really dont like using forks, they are cumbersome and just create more dishes to be washed.

"a fork can be used many times by many people...these hands are just for me"
quote along those lines by a wise uncle at mosque (he was actually trying to get me to bring my own topi instead of using the ones from the masjid, but it still makes a good quote)
Lol, what a pearl of wisdom, you should have him patent that quote before i steal it and pass it off as my own.
Depends on where im at really. If im visiting lebanon then i will use my hands ( if im eating with my grandfather or my older uncles)
But thats pretty much it, otherwise i will stick to utensils purely out of habit if not comfort.

SubhaanAllah!! Excellent reminder.
Personally it depends on what type of food it is and where i'm eating it. I use my hands when i'm at home with roti or whatnot, but i have to use a spoon for rice, purely out of habit. There's always pasta and stirfries, that need a fork.
My grandma shouted at me yesterday for eating my pasta with a fork. :(
She told me to eat it with my hands. Are you serious?

Including me (sometimes).
Depends what type of pasta it is too. If it's got the kind of sauce that stains your fingers, or if its too cheesy then i'd use a fork.

my family n extended family all eat with hands unless its soup or something liquidy....then a spoon is used....thats as far as it would go.....
the usage of cutlery to eat is a western way and i guess people think that to look modern you have to do as the westerners do.....dunno just my 2cents...

yesterday we did a bake sale at my uni4 charity week, i was one of the people at the stalls...so anyways when we sold a cake some people would ask for a spoon
when we said we didn't have any, and we suggested eat with your hand ppl looked at us like:wacko: lol so it's a very widespread practise now even amongst us.
I think some people get put off because it can be hard but just as you had to learn to use cultery learn to use your hands...then you can get all those small grains of raise you spend ages chasing after on your plate with your fork :D
