As-Salaamu 'Alaykum,
As soon as I wake up, I have to run and rid myself of that disgusting mouth taste and odor. I do not have the patience to make breakfast, eat it and THEN brush my teeth. I couldnt, that just feels so wrong.

where you from ?
I brush my teeth afterwards. Kill two birds with one stone
However, I haven't brushed in like a week (hey, I'm in college), so now my gums are starting to bleed. Any suggestions other than brushing my teeth more often?

I brush before though I try to brush after I've had breakie whenever i can ... It doesnt make sense to brush ur teeth at night just before bed and then brush as soon as u wake ... just use mouth wash to refresh ur breath :)

well I do mainly brush before but then i dont get the time to brush after i eat breakie (the very few days that i do!) But the dentist says brush ur teeth after u eat.
And any baceria within us is normal ... it wont harm us ... its there for a reason  ... so if some of us delay brushing our teeth for half an hour, i dont think we'll die.

I generally don't tend to eat breakfast so it'll have to be before (ie right after I get out of my bed).

brush it straight away in morning b4 breakfast
Here's what I see wrong with brushing teeth before breakfast:
1) You have the taste of toothpaste in your mouth when you eat breakfast. And some things (like apples or milk) are not made to be mixed with the taste of toothpaste because it tastes like bleach or something
2) If you brush before breakfast, you'll dirty your teeth anyways when you eat. Brush afterwards will clean morning mouth and leftovers of breakfast.
You know?
You can always wash the taste of toothpaste out properly..it's not permanent
and how does eating dirty your teeth anyway

Have you ever eaten an Oreo?
oh dear god.... ^^^
i brush before but if drink tea or something then i brush before AND after.
i remember one time wen my brother was in elementary school the kids had to talk about waking up in the morning and when my brother said he brushes and then eats breakfast the teacher was shocked and thought that was crazy. my brother told her that if u brush after breakfast, when ur eating ur basically swallowing all the germs nested in ur mouth from sleeping, and his teacher didnt say anything after that :p

As soon as I wake up. They feel horrible.
I then proceed to brush 2-3 times more in that day (if possible). I like my teeth feeling somewhat smooth.

What does that mean? The teeth started to bleed or something?
I also read that if you brush your teeth too much and too hard, you actually start brushing the gums away until you see the roots of the teeth. I've been kind of paranoid about not brushing too much after seeing that picture.

enamel that gets affected like if u drink orange juice or a citric kind of juice and brush it immediately u shud wait like 15 mins if not it cn b corrosive wen u brush it... apparently.
wolf brushing ur teeth several times per day is not gna do that to ur teeth. if the gums wore away they must hav been doing something more, or mayb they got gum desise thru NOT brushing?

5 times a day one can brush their teeth without fearing to harm them inshALLAH.
In a hadeeth Prophet (saw) said that: If it was not hard for my ummah I would made it mandatory to clean their teeth 5 times a day.
So..Brush --brush ---brush your teeth :D
Keep them neat and clean

Enamel is the hard protective coating of ur tooth, which protects the sensitive dentine part underneath. When the enamlel is worn away, the dentine part becomes exposed ... causing pain and sensitivity.
It happens to ppl who excessively brush their teeth or get them professionally cleaned all the time.
Or ppl that drink too much coke and have too many sweets and dont brush their teeth.
Thats why kids teeth rot fast if they dont brush regularly... they dont have the same hard enamel as adults ... the sugars and juices remain on the teeth and slowly eat them away.
enamel that gets affected like if u drink orange juice or a citric kind of juice and brush it immediately u shud wait like 15 mins if not it cn b corrosive wen u brush it... apparently.
Apparently the dentist informed my sis/law not brush her teeth soon after eating anything ... as they are more senitive at the time. I'm not sure about orange juice but iv brushed my teeth soon after drinking coke and it felt funny ... i kinda figured it out myself and stopped :o

Actually its true ... my sis/law is 27 yrs old ... and literally brushed away one of her tooth ... she used to excessively brush them ... and the wore the enamel away ... the dentist took it out.
Ppl that dont have a misqwak stick should get one immediately

Bring Back The Siwakkkk
Hmm...I brush my teeth in the night, in the morning as I wake up and just before I go of to work. Sometimes I use miswak before asr, if I'm home in time, or even before magrib. Sounds like too much, but better that than too little...

quite a disappointing thread - with regards to the replies i'm seeing.
I use to brush before for the same reasons as most have given. However you'll find that if you brush for Fajr and the night before, you'll find that during the 'morning' you'll only need to make a complimentary brush.
I also recommend to brush before every salat or get use to using a miswak regularly, it's great against bad breath. Worked wonders for me!

Terrible :torture:
But at least the college girls will keep away from you :outta:
The more you brush the more your gums will bleed, but then keep brushing and eventually they will stop bleeding.

I'm kinda of OCD when it comes to tooth brushing, I brush as soon as I get up, after each meal or snack and before I go to bed. I just can't have that 'hairy-tooth' feeling, it grosses me out really bad.
