I know that shoulders should be covered while performing salat. But someone tells me that it is also mandatory to cover upto the wrist (elbow to wrist) to perform salat otherwise the salat will not be valid. Is it really necessary to wear full sleeve shirts etc. to perform salat ?

Not as far as I'm aware.

In fact, I'm sure I've seen people reading Salaat in the Holy Mosque (in Mecca or was it Medina) with sleeveless shirts.

As far as I know, its makruh to wear short-sleeved or sleeveless shirts and do salah, but it doesn't invalidate the salah. Its the same as doing salah without a headdress...

Well, I heard that it's sunnah the more we cover up, but covering from knees to naval is minimum.

This is just what I was told by my huzur. I think he got it from al Mukhtasar al Quduri but I just looked through a brief translation online and couldn't find it.
