If a person unintentionally swallows something that is stuck between his teeth, or if it is so small that he could not tell it was there or spit it out, this is counted as being part of his saliva and it does not break his fast. But if it is big enough to spit out, he should spit it out. If he spits it out, this is OK, but if he swallows it, this breaks his fast. If it can be diluted in the mouth, in whole or in part, and it has an added taste or sweetness, it is haraam for him to chew it. If any of this substance reaches the throat, this breaks the fast. If a person spits out water after rinsing his mouth, his fast is not affected by any moisture or wetness that is left behind, because he cannot help it.

Using siwaak is Sunnah for the one who is fasting at all times of the day, even if it is wet. If a person who is fasting uses a siwaak and detects some heat or other taste from it and swallows it, or if he takes the siwaak out of his mouth and sees saliva on it then puts it back in his mouth and swallows the saliva, this does not break his fast. (al-Fataawa al-Sa’diyyah, 245). He should avoid any substance that can be diluted, such as the green siwaak, or siwaak that has any extra flavour added to it, like lemon or mint. He should spit out any small pieces that come off the siwaak in his mouth; he should not swallow them deliberately, but if he swallows them accidentally, there is no harm done.

you swallowed it and didn't realise you were fasting? if so then your fast didn't break.

I was wondering this too. When I got up officially this morning, I put the tiniest amount of toothpaste in my mouth so I didn't have bad breath. I didn't realize until later if this broke the fast or not. I don't swallow it, I just swish it around in my mouth to kill all the germs and everything, and then it just sort of dissolves.

if you did it unknowingly then your fast doesn't break, but knowingly it would break.

On a couple of occasions (many years ago) I've drunk water forgetting that I was fasting.

It doesn't break your fast as long as you genuinely forgot you were fasting, the truth of the matter is between you and Allah(swt).

how about - if you intentianally brush ur teeth with the smallest amount of toothpaste....however do not swallow anything? Wat does this result in?....does that break a persons fast????

I brush my teeth again if I sleep after closing my fast, many people diagree with it.

However I dont brush my teeth for nourishment and Im not in the habit of eating toothpaste, so I dont see a problem with it.

However that's my personal preference and I believe the ruling is somewhat different!

Was just going through Islam-QA.com - Sh Munajjid and co say its permissable aslong it does not reach the stomach..

But remember, its not to your mouth being void of food that the smells comes, due to the stomach being empty..

Perfume your beards! and clothes... and selves...

i just chekd on islam QA - and Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid

says that - "If tooth paste does not get into the throat, then the fast is not broken. However, it would be better to use tooth paste at night and to Sewaak at day time."

no, i read a kitaab on that, a woman is only allowed to do that if she has a husband that would hit her or somethign if the food is not right (if i remember corectly), if she hasn't (like i assume most men should be) then she can't do it.

Ibn ‘Abbaas said: There is nothing wrong with tasting what is being cooked or whatever. Narrated by al-Bukhaari in a mu’allaq report.

Imam Ahmad said: I prefer that he should avoid tasting food, but if he does that it will not affect him and there is nothing wrong with that. Al-Mughni, 4/359.

you do not need to gargle ur mouth when fasting (its a sunnah), u can merely just wipe ur lips with water. reason being that u do not eat during the day so what is there to rinse from the point of view that there would be no food particles to rid of!!!
if anything is swallowed unintentionally then it does not invalidate ur fast. say if u do find food particles in the mouth then u should rid of it and if its swallowed unintentionally then it does not invalidate ur fast.

one is allowed to brush ur teeth, but it is more for those who works with people on a daily basis, but care should be taken that nothing is swallowed.
