AL QAMR,the Moon

Ibn Umar (ra) reported that Nabi Muhammad (saw) as saying, ‘Do not fast till you see the new moon and do not break your fast until you see it; but if the weather is cloudy calculate when it should appear.’ In a version he (saw) said, ‘the month consists of twenty-nine days, and if the weather is cloudy wait till thirty days of the previous month has passed.’ (Bukhari and Muslim)

“He who has made the sun [a source of] radiant light and the moon a light [reflected], and has determined for it phases so that you may know how to compute the years and to measure [time].” V10;5

“They will ask you about the new moons. Say: they indicate for [various doings of] mankind, including the pilgrimage.” V2;189

‘Blessed be He Who has placed in the heaven big stars, and had placed therein a great lamp (sun), and a moon giving light.’ V25;61

“And in the moon, for which we have determined phases [which it must traverse] till it becomes like an old date-stalk dried up and curved.’ V36;39

The month of Ramadhaan gradually rotates backwards through all the seasons and months. The Muslim experiences the discipline of fasting under all kinds of conditions in all seasons. In winter the days are short and cold making fasting easier. While in summer the long hoot days make fasting more difficult. Autumn and Spring bring intermediate situations. Thus is the wisdom of following the Lunar calendar, Muslims experience different types of fasting each time Ramadhaan comes around.

Ibn Abbas (ra) told a desert Arab coming to Nabi Muhammad (saw) and saying he had seen the new moon of Ramadhaan. He asked him whether he testified that there is no god but Allah and he replied that he did. Ibn Abbas then asked if he testified that Muhammad (saw) is the messenger of Allah, and when he replied that he did Ibn Abbas said, ‘Bilal (ra) announce to the people that they must fast tomorrow.’
Abu Dawood

Ammar bin Yasir (ra) said, ‘he who fasts on a day which he is doubtful has disobeyed Al-Qasim (saw)’ Tirmidhi
