View Full Version : Awliya and Their Karamaat
It has been requested from me to write about this topic, so may Allah accept from us the little we know and share, and may He rid it off error and short coming.
Ibn Hajar said: What is meant by the wali of Allah is: one who is persistent in obedience and sincere in worship.
One becomes a friend of someone when they always remember the friend, when they seek the friends pleasure by obeying their wishes and by doing things that pleases the friend. That friend becomes especially close when he does things for the friend when the friend was not asking for it.
In relation to Allah that Friendship and closeness starts by the person first pleasing Allah and acquiring His pleasure by implementing All that Allah had commanded, the Faraaid. Then they draw one level more dear to Allah when they perform the deeds which the Beloved of Allah Mustafa SAW has instructed, the Sunnah. Then they draw the most near when they perform complimentary deeds solely for Allah's pleasure, when there is no obligation on them to do so from Allah, but the offering of His Friendship.
Prophet Muhammad SAW said: Allah the Exalted has said: 'I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a wali of mine. And the most beloved thing with which My slave comes nearer to Me is what I have enjoined upon him; and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil till I love him. When I love him I become his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks (something) from Me, I give him, and if he asks My Protection (refuge), I protect him.
When one's focus and Muhaba and total aim becomes the pleasure of Allah, and all that person's actions are as per the command of Allah. As mentioned in the above hadith, "I become his hearing, with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees...." that person totally molds themselves to that which Allah has commanded in Quran and Sunnah. They dont look at what is haram, they dont listen to what is haram, they dont walk towards haram, they dont touch or feel what is haram. That is what is meant by "I become his hearing....", that the person molds himself in the frame work of Quran and Sunnah.
When a person reaches this level, which is the side of the relationship from the slaves side, it is the closeness which the slave has drawn himself, and dragged his nafs, towards Allah, then the Promise of Allah is such, that if you walk towards Him He runs towards you. Hence then Allah becomes their close friend, and when Allah becomes that close friend then He gives in return for what you gave. However His giving is much greater and much better than our giving. Those givings come in the way of Karamaat, Protection, Ease of Life and no fear of what is coming for them.
Allah Mention in the Holy Quran "Ala Ina awliyaa Allahi lakhawfun alaiyhim wa laa hum yahzanuun, alatheena amanoo wa kanuu yataqoon, la humul bushraa fil hayatitdunya wa fil akhira…..” “verily upon the Awliyaa of Allah there is no fear or dismay(sadness), they are the ones who believe and have Taqwa, for them are glad tidings in dunya and in the hereafter…..”
Karamaat. Karamaat it is something additional, and not a requirement for al-Wilaya.
Karamah of Awliya is no where near the Mu’jiza of the Ambiyah, nor in calibre, magnitude or vividness. The Karamah of Awliya is such that it is a blessing, Awliyah can receive;
Ilhaam (Inspiration), The Prophet SAW said: Among the nations who lived before you, there were men who used to be inspired with guidance [though they were not prophets], and if there is any of such persons amongst my followers, it is 'Umar. This shows that inspiration does exist and it also happens to those who are not nabi.
Farasah (Insight); ‘Uthman ibn ‘Afaan –May Allah be pleased with him- when a man entered to him, after staring at the beauty of a woman in the street on his way to ‘Uthman. So ‘Uthman said when the man entered: [why] would one among you enter on me, when the signs of adultery can be clearly seen on his eyes?! So I said [amazed at his intuition]: Is this a revelation after Prophet Muhammad –Peace be upon him-? So he replied: No, rather it is an insight, and a proof, and a true Farasah), and
Mukaashafa (vision) knowledge which Allah places in the heart of His true slaves by which they sees things that normally would not be seen or known. Madarij Al-Saalikeen, 3/233. All of these have been narrated in the Quran and Hadith.
However the True awliya never exhibit these Karamaat unless there is no other option, they keep it hidden.
The Imam of Ba Alawiyah, had one of his students, stay with him for 20years. This student served him, worshiped with him, traveled with him and spent all his days and nights with the Imam. The aim of this Salik(Seeker) was, to see a Karamah from the Imam. After 20years when he had seen nothing, he one day very politely came to the Imam and asked "Ya Imam, it has been 20years I have been serving you, and not one day did I see you perform any Karamaa". The imam smiled and asked him "When you were with me did we miss one Fard salah?" the Salik replied "no", then the Imam asked "Did we miss one Sunnah Salah?" the Salik replied "no", then the Imam asked "Did we miss on Nafil Salah?" the Salik replied "no", so the Imam said, "Now that you have seen what you came for, you are free to go".
And from the beautiful reflection of Baa Yazid Al-Bistaami: Allah has many creations, that walk on water, yet have no value in the sight of Allah, so if you see someone who was given from the Gifts that makes him fly, do not be deceived by him until you see how he is when it comes to the Orders and His Restrictions, His boundaries and His Laws (Quran and Sunnah).
The aim and Maqsad(Purpose) of the Friends of Allah is never to gain Karamaat, those are gifts given to them, that they hide. Similarly a salik should not travel the journey towards Allah counting when they will be able to do something amazing, if that is the aim, then maybe one day they will walk on water but that has become their worship and they will mean nothing in the sight of Allah.
And Allah Knows best, wa ma alaina ilal balagh.

Karamah would mean Something extra ordinary but not a Miracle , since miracles are only for prophets .
Karamah refers to the honor of something within itself, or the honor of the thing amongst Creation and it is the opposite of wickedness or evil. A Karamah can therefore only be something honored amongst creation that is good of nature. Therefore Magic, trickery can not be Karamah.

:jkk: brother for taking the time out to write that for us :)
Brother, I've heard that some of these karamah can be quite amazing miracles, such as people seeing a wali of Allah at the same time in different places, their souls being able to travel like this or take different forms. What should be our belief regarding these things and whether they are possible for the awliya?

They can not be called Miracles, they Are distinguished actions. Is there a limit to the gifts Allah can give his servants? Of course there isnt.
However we only narrate what has been narrated from the Prophet SAW, Sahaba, Salaf and our A'ima Al Mujtahideen. Stipulation in this regard is not necessary and it serves no purpose. If we witness Karamah from a servant of Allah who we know is a true Abdillah, then we say Alhamdulillah. There is no benefit it saying "is this possible, is that possible".
Umar Ibn Al Khattab RA saw the approaching armies in Syria and He instructed His general from Madeena Al Munawara and His general heard it and did so. Umar RA in Madeen his General In Syria and being attacked from a direction he wasnt aware of. Umar RA warns him from Madeen Al Munawara. That is just one example of what is possible.
But again it is not something that we measure the piety of a servant by. Some great Awliya never showed any Karamah.

Did Shaykh talk about this at the Suhbah?
His Father (RA) manifested many of these and although they defy logic, science and common sense their as beliveable and as manifest as any other form of reality. Beautiful hearing about them.

Focus on
1. Faraaid
2. Sunnan
3. Nawafil
4. Istighfar
You should not day dream about Karamaa, It is not the yard stick by which we measure piety or Nisbah.
Riza Khan Barelwi also manifested many things, but we all know what happened to him, and Baa Yazid Al-Bistaami said: Allah has many creations, that walk on water, yet have no value in the sight of Allah...think about that
What the Ma'Shaiykh manifest you should not be looking at, but what brought him those gifts (IbadaaH) is what you should focus on. It is very important not to lose focus, it is very easy to start making hobbies out of deen. Every action should be one of obedience to Allah, not of personal ambition, not a hobby. The minute the most noble deed becomes ambition, it is worthless.

Yeh shaykh also narrated that incident with Umar(ra) to us. Eemee, shaykh didn't mention any karamaa of his father rahimullah, but did say he was a great wali. I love hearing shaykh talk about his father, he teaches us many lessons through his example and it's heartwarming :) [read the one in my latest notes in general from the talk on ignorance]
And bro, I was interested in this because of the usual negative reaction of disbelief and cynicism many people have toward it.. and I've not read much about it, shaykh only mentioned it briefly so I wanted a bit more clarification. :)

Umar RA in Madeen his General In Syria and being attacked from a direction he wasnt aware of. Umar RA warns him from Madeen Al Munawara. That is just one example of what is possible.
Na'am masha'allah, more details of this incident can be found:
'.....One Friday, while leading the congregational (Jumm'ah) prayer in the Great Masjid at Medina, Umar ibn al Khattab (ra) suddenly started shouting "To the hill Sariya! To the hill!" Those who were in the Masjid with Umar asked him what the matter was.
Umar explained that a group of enemies was about to attack the Muslims led by a man whose name was Sariya during one of their expeditions in Persia. Foreseeing the danger he wanted to warn Sariya to rush back to the hill where he and his men would be safe and win the battle.
Several weeks after the incident, a messenger from the battlefield brought the news of the Muslim's victory. He also related how the voice of the Caliph had warned them in time. By that miracle, Sariya had heard Umar's warning and led his men to the hill to a position of safety where they had easily defeated the enemy.
In this incident, we see that by the Grace of Allaah azza wa jall, Umar has a vision that shows him the army in danger hence shouting his directions to the leader who by the Grace of Allaah azza wa jall heard this shout hundreds of miles away and acted upon it.'

Barak'allahu Feeki.
Such incidents with those close to Allah (swt) occur in modern times also- there was an incident a few year back whereby some Palestinan little brothers were throwing stones at a tank that came into Nablus to take over the area then an IDF vehicle with a machine gunner positioned on the top started shooting at them with live rounds of bullet to get them to stop so at this all the little children started to run away.
Then one little brother ran quickly in the wrong direction becoming isolated from the rest so the machine gunner vehicle chased him close to a side street, he picked up a stone and threw this at the vehicle and when the stone was thrown it exploded! This gave just enough time for the little bro to get away into the alley ways alhamdulillah- they IDF then lied and said that the resistance groups were supplying children with grenades or something like that.
But this was witnessed by some children nearby and the refugee brothers and sisters there.

Oh yeah and Shaykh Dr. Abdullah Yusuf Azzam as-Shaheed (insha'allah) mentions many of these like incidents occured when the brothers were fighting the Russians, he made a collection of all the karamaat that the Mujahideen brothers witnessed in the book 'The Signs of ar-Rahmaan in the Jihad of the Afghan', some of these are narrated as follows:
These incidents [which are going to be narrated] are, in reality, more extraordinary than one can possibly imagine, and appear to resemble fairytales. I have personally heard them with my own ears; and have written them with my own hands from those Mujahideen who themselves were present. I have heard these miracles from such men who are trustworthy and reliable, and who have been constantly on the battlefield. The miracles are many, so much so that they more or less reach the degree of Tawaatur . I have heard numerous such miraculous episodes, but brevity does not allow me to enumerate all of them. Allah Ta'ala has not made it except as a glad tiding, so that your hearts may achieve tranquility by it.
Most of the Bodies of the Shuhadaa do not Change or Rot
This fact has reached the degree of Tawaatur. It is recorded in the Shafee Kitaab, Nihaayatul Muhtaj:
If a person lent out land so that a deceased may be buried in that land, he may only claim the land back once the body has been completely annihilated. In the case where the deceased is a Nabi or a Shaheed, the land can never be claimed since the bodies of these two never decay.
The Hanafee Jurist, Ibn Aabideen rahmatullah 'alayhi writes in his commentary of Kitaabul-Jihaad:
It is Haraam for the earth to consume the body of a Shaheed.
However I could not find a hadith in this regard. Nevertheless, the incident of the body of Hamzah [ra] has just passed [which will suffice as proof].
The Martyrs of Afghanistan
Umar Hanif, who was my commander in the Zarmah district, has narrated to me in the house of Nasrullah Mansoor [the leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Front] that:
1) I have never seen a single Shaheed whose body has changed or gave off a bad odour.
2) I have never seen dogs touching a single Shaheed even though they devoured the bodies of the communists.
3) I myself opened 12 graves [of the Shuhadaa], three or four years after their burial, and I did not find one whose odour had changed.
4) I have seen many a Shaheed more than a year after their burial. Their wounds were fresh, the blood still flowing.
An Imaam narrated to me:
I saw Shaheed Abdul Majeed Muhammad three months after his Shahaadat. he was just as he had been ; and his body exuded the fragrance of musk.
Birds with the Mujaahideen
1. Moulana Arsalaan narrated to me:
At times, even before the arrival of the attacking Russian aircraft, we were apprised of the iminent attack. Birds would come and hover above our troops before the jets arrived. Wherever we would see them hovering, we would prepare for the attack of the jets.
2. Moulana Abdul Jaleel Haqqani was the most famous Mujaahid of Afghanistan without exception. He told me:
On numerous occasions I had seen birds flying below the aircrafts, protecting the Mujaahideen from the shells of the bombers.
3. Abdul Jabbar Niyaazi narrated to me:
I saw birds flying below the planes on two occasions.
4. Moulana Arsalaan reported to me:
I saw the birds many times protecting them [the Mujaahideen].
5. Qurbaan Muhammad narrated to me that:
He once saw about 300 birds that were struck by jets, but not a single one was injured.
6. Al-Haaj Muhammad Jal, who was a Mujaahid at Kanr, reported to me:
On more than ten occasions I saw the birds flying ahead of the jets, whose speed was one and a half times the speed of sound.
The Horses
Arsalaan also narrated to me:
We attacked the communists at a place called Arjoon and we killed 500 and captured 83. We said to them:
[I]"Why is it that you people were defeated, whereas you people killed only one Shaheed?"
The prisoner said:
"You people were riding on horses, and when we shot at them they ran away and we could not hit them [with bullets]."
It is established from the Quraan that the Malaa'ikah [Angels] descended on the occasion of Badr:
When your Rabb commanded the Malaa'ikah, I am with you all, so strengthen those who have brought Imaan. I will soon instill terror into the hearts of those who commit Kufr. Strike [the enemy] above their necks and on all [their] fingertips.
The tafseer of the following aayah:
[I]Most certainly, if you adopt Sabr and Taqwa, and they suddenly attack you, your Rabb will assist you with five thousand Malaa'ikah, marked. (By "marked" is meant that they had a distinctive sign. According to some Mufassireen, the Malaa'ikah were 'marked' by their unique turbans. According to others it refers to a particular sign on the horses of the Malaa'ikah.)
was given by Imam Qurtubi [ra] as:
Every army which adopts sabr, and hopes for reward, the Malaa'ikah will come upon them, fighting alongside them, since Allah Ta'aala has appointed these Malaa'ikah as Mujaahideen till the Day of Qiyaamah.
Hasan [ra] said: these five thousand are a support for the Mu'mineen till the Day of Qiyaamah.
Imam Muslim [ra] narrates from ibn Abbas [ra]:
On the Day [of Badr] when a Muslim was chasing one of the mushrikeen, all of a sudden he heard the cracking of a whip above him, and the sound of a horseman saying:
"Proceed, O Hayzoom!"
He looked at the mushrik in front of him, laying flat. His nose was smashed, and his face split open, as if he was struck by a whip. It had become completely blackened. An Ansaari reported this to Rasulallah [saws] who responded:
"You have spoken the truth. That was from the Helpers of the Third Heaven."
Muhammad Yaasir reported to me:
When the communists entered a town with their tanks, they enquired where the 'stables for the horses of the Muslim brothers' were. The people were surprised since they did not ride horses. They then realized that these were the horses of the Malaa'ikah.
Provisions that do not Deplete
Jalaaluddin Haqqaani narrated to me:
I issued a Mujaahid with some ammunition, and he went into the battlefield. He fired many shots, but the ammunition did not decrease, and he returned with all of it.
A Tank Rides Over Him, but He Remains Alive
1.) Abdul Jabbaar narrated to me:
While I was looking on, a tank rolled over a Mujaahid named Ghulaam Muhayyuddeen, and he remained alive.
2.) Al Haaj Muhammad Yusuf, the deputy ameer of the Laukar district, narrated to me:
A tank passed over the body of the Mujaahid Badr Muhammad Jal, and he did not die nor was he injured.
Scorpions with the Mujaahideen
And none knows the army of your Rabb besides Him
Abdus Samad and Mahbubullah both narrated to me:
The communists set up camp in the plains of Qundoos [a city]. The scorpions attacked them and bit them. Six of them died and the remainder fled.
Children on the Battlefield
Abdul Manaan narrated to me:
The Mujaahid Ameer Jaan was martyred. A while thereafter the [Russian] tanks rolled into his hometown. His son, who was only three years old, came out with a match to burn the tanks.
The Russian commander asked: "What does he want?"
They replied: "He wants to burn the tanks."
Umar Haneef narrated to me:
The tanks once besieged the Mujaahideen in a Masjid. A young lady, who was to get married two days thereafter, came out and made du'a as follows:
"O Allah, if they intend any harm to the Mujaahideen, make me a ransom for them."
The young lady attained Shahaadah and the Mujaahideen survived.
Muazzin informed me:
When Anjeer Jal was martyred, his mother came out beaming with happiness. People began firing out of delight at his Shahaadah.
Shells do not Explode
1. Jalaaluddeen Haqqaani narrated to me:
We were 30 Mujaahideen upon whom the planes began bombing. All the shells that landed around us exploded, but a shell that fell amongst us did not explode. It was about 45 kg in weight. If it had exploded, it would have killed most of us.
2. Abdul Mannaan narrated to me:
We were 3000 Mujaahideen at our camp when the jets released 300 napalm bombs over us. Not a single one exploded, and we transported all of them to Kuta [a town in Pakistan where the Mujaahideen were stationed].
Bullets do not Pierce Their Bodies
1. Jalaaluddeen narrated to me:
I had seen many Mujaahideen with me who would come from the battlefield, their clothes pierced by bullets, but not a bullet had entered their bodies.
Light Ascends from the Body of a Shaheed
1. The Mujaahid Abdul Mannaan, who was the leader at Helmaan, western Qindaar, reported to me:
We were 600 men and the kuffar were 6000, all of them from Russia. They were equipped with 600 tanks and 45 planes. They attacked us and the battle raged for 18 days.
The result: 33 Mujaahideen attained Shahaadah.
The enemy losses: 450 dead and 36 captured.
We destroyed 30 tanks and dropped two planes.
It was summer. This entire period [of 18 days] passed, and not a single body of any Shaheed changed or gave off an odour. One of the Shuhadaa was Abdul Ghafoor, son of Deen Muhammad. Every night a light would extend from him till the sky, and would remain for about 3 minutes, then descend. All of the Mujaahideen present saw this light.
2. Umar Haneef related to me:
In February 1982, every night after Esha a light used to descend from the sky onto the courtyard of our [the Mujahideen's] home. It would encircle the courtyard for a while, then disappear.
Slumber
Allah Ta'ala says in the Qur'aan:
[I]When He encompassed you all with slumber as a source of Peace from Him.
In Tafseer 'Mukhtasar ibn Katheer' the following is narrated:
Abu Talha [ra] says: "I was one of those whom slumber overcame on the day of Uhud. The sword fell from my hand a number of times. It would fall and I would pick it up. Again it would fall and I would pick it up. I looked towards them [the Muslims] and saw them swaying back and forth [dozing] while their shields were above them."
It is reported from Ali [ra]:
"On the day of Badr. we had only one horseman, Miqdaad [ra]. I had witnessed the scene where all of us were asleep, except Rasulallah [saws] who was under a tree, crying, till dawn broke."
Abdullah bin Mas'ud says:
"Slumber during fighting is a source of peace from Allah Ta'ala, and slumber during Salaah is from shaitaan."
Slumber Overcomes Arsalaan
1. Moulwy Arsalaan reported to me:
He slept during the battle in Shahi Kau for ten minutes, while shells were being hurled against them from all directions.
2. Abdur Rahmaan informed me:
During the battle of Rayjee [Baki], about 150 to 200 tanks attacked us. Due to [the ear-splitting sound of] the large number of shells, the Mujaahideen could not hear for two to three days. Then sleep overcame us during the battle. We woke up, contented and serene. One of the Mujaahideen struck a tank, which caught alight. One of the flaming fragments [of the tank] fell upon a provision vehicle. Seven vehicles blew up and we captured another five.
3. Abdullah - Hikmatyaar's bodyguard narrated to me:
Sleep overpowered me a number of times during the battles. I considered this a source of serenity from Allah Ta'ala, and a bounty.
4. Abdur Rasheed Abdul Qaadir of Ghamaam, informed me:
I witnessed on three occasions slumber overcoming the Mujaahideen at the moment the Russians attacked. They would sleep for two to three minutes, then awake with a new determination. They would then triumph over the Russians.
Subhan'allah.

Jazakallah for the complete report brother Abu on the incident of Umar RA.
Eeman, i wasnt telling you off, just getting your focus right, it is easy to be awed and amazed by the karamaat and easily attracted to them. Then losing focus of the real aim, striving towards Allah.
Yes there were many many Karamaat in our Beloved Afghanistan. Some of which we witnessed first hand. That place will never be without Islam, it is the promise of Mustafa SAW.

Jzk hekmaa. Sadly people do lose focus.
There is a very deviant culture that emerges from stories of karamah.
People build shrines over graves, shrines at where a certain "awliya" sat, shrines where "awliyah" walked through, etc.
Each shrine has its own cure/purpose, some for toothache, others pregnancy issues, backaches, eyes, ears etc etc.
Instead of relying on Allah, people visit these shrines based on a story of a karamah and seek aid from it, sacrifice animals at it and even party.

Assalamu Alaikum,
Na'am Akhy hkrespect indeed you have spoken words of truth- rather than worship the one who gave the abilities to his Awliyah and examining which righteous deeds had got this the slave so close the people start worshipping the man instead of their Rabb.

More incredible is the narration of Khaled ibn Waleed (ra) drinking poison yet no harm befell him:
'.....When al-Heerah had been conquered and set based, Khalid was approached by a Persian leader wearing a bottle on his belt. Khalid snatched the bottle and poured the contents on his hand and asked the Persian as to what it is. The Persian responded that it is poison. He then scorned and added, “If you people are truthful then, it will not hurt you. However, if you are lying, then it is the worst of the poisons.”
As the Muslims and the Persians watched this exchange of words, Khalid– the Sword of Allaah, declared his belief with a voice that pierced the hearts of those present:
بسم الله الذي لا يضر مع اسمه شيء في الارض ولا في السماء وهو السميعالعليم
In the Name of Allaah, in whose name nothing on Earth nor in the Heavens is harmed. And He is the all-Hearing all-Knowing
.…And drank the liquid. In the Name of Allaah, the poison had no effect on Khalid. The man stood shocked and in response declared, “If what my eyes are seeing is true, then you people will rule the world.”
