Father Christmas is based on a real person, St. Nicholas.
St. Nicholas, or Sinter Klaas in Dutch, was a very shy man and wanted to give money to poor people without them knowing about it. It is said that one day, he climbed the roof of a house and dropped a purse of money down the chimney. It landed in the stocking which a girl had put to dry by the fire! This may explain the belief that Father Christmas comes down the chimney and places gifts in children's stockings.
When the Dutch introduded Sinter Klaas to the Americans they called him Santa Cla

You're a couple of months early with this. what's more, you're mistaken.
St Nicholas, alias Santa Claus, who may or may not have existed and may or may not have done the things he was said to have done, was separate to Father Christmas. Gifts were given, allegedly following Santa Claus's example, in some European countries at Christmas. his motive for secrecy in his generosity was modesty, not shyness, incidentally.
Father Christmas had no connexion with christianity and did not bring gifts; he was probably pre-christian in origin and was a leader of revelry at the winter solstice in England. It was only when the two traditions met in the Amercias that they were combined and the two separate characters merged.
i love fatha chreesmas :o
So where did the red suit and the white hair and beard come from? Surely St Nicholas did not have a costume when he went to give money to the poor. I heard that originally the suit was green but it was changed to red by coca cola to go with their theme?
