I use abiword because:

2. Free

Office 2007 is a big ripoff if you ask me @ £500. You can always get open office.org for free.
If you really must pay, then you can get this (http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/126060) for £11.45.

Yes it is since you can save the files in .doc format so Microsoft Word will be able to modify it too. The only drawback to this application is that it takes a bit longer to load for larger files. But the interface and features are more or less the same, if not better than Word 2003.
It is compatible with ALL OPERATING SYSTEMS too, it works on Windows, Linux, Sun Solaris and Mac OSX. I have been trying to use less Microsoft programs, OpenOffice is a really good alternative. It is free and you won't get into trouble for installing it on your friends PC.
It adds value to your laptop since it is completely legal to use (instead of using a hacked version of Word). Or paying over £100 for Microsofts apps.

I use KWord (I'm impressed that it was on your list :p Thought I'd have to vote "Other" :p)
I hate Openoffice...its such a memory hog. It slows my computer down to a crawl if I load it, and eventually causes it to freeze.
Its fugly as hell in KDE...I know there's some work to remedy this but its not enough (especially cos I use "non-standard" icon and widget styles...perhaps this will change with KDE4 and Oxygen...)
Its slooow (slightly different to being a memory hog) and unresponsive.
The layout is awful. Copying MS Office 97 in everything it does doesn't make it good. MS Office is crap imho, it just happens to be the best. Being the best doesn't mean its good ;) Besides, MS even changed the interface for Office 2007...maybe they should take a hint ;)
In contrast, KWord is well integrated, light weight, slim, responsive and functional.
What more could I ask for?

No way bro, that's because KWord doesn't have that many features. The layout is similar to office so that people who use Word are able to start using it without having to learn a new system.
Office 2007 interface is rubbish, i've been using it on my laptop. The GUI is C R A P. It will be good for OpenOffice NOT to copy the design. Trust me. That GUI is a big headache. It looks good, but rubbish to use.

Thats true, KWord doesn't have as many features as OpenOffice, but frankly, I don't need all the features of OpenOffice. Its bloat. All I wanna do is make some documents for school and whatever...some of it might be a bit "creative" occasionally...but KWord handles all that fine (its kind of a cross between a word processor and a desktop publisher)
Anyway, Office has as many features if not more than OpenOffice, but it clearly outperforms OOo by miles.
The real reason(s) OpenOffice is so slow and such a memory hog is because its made in java, which generally isn't great for creating large graphical applications (all Java toolkits are horribly slow) and because its coded so poorly...
I think the only reason it even survives is because of its endorsement by Sun, and because it is unfortunately the most feature-full, cross platform, free word processor/office suite out there...
I understand that about the interface...KWord has a conservative interface as well. But like all other KDE apps, its very customiseable and I can remove the clutter if I don't want it. Something which isn't as easy with OOo.
And I can't comment about Office 2007 interface...I've never used it :)

I guess you like more simple apps and are willing to sacrifice some features for speed. Then KWord is great for you. But most people want something that can do everything...for nothing lol. I agree with you about the speed issue. But it's a sacrifice i'm willing to make to save a few £££'s ;).

lol KWord is free so I'm not making any compromise ;) :p
I just don't need the features so I don't see why my word processor should take 17.3 seconds to load up, and almost cause a system crash, for nothing...
And yeah but it depends on the application/job. I use KDE and the applications that come with it (well with Kubuntu anyway) are top masha'Allah.
The only non-KDE applications I use are the GIMP (Krita is cool but I'm more used to the GIMP...) Firefox (thats a long one in itself :p I tried Konqueror many times but I always come back to Firefox :D) and XMMS because its super light
Everything else is KDE :D

Yes, and for only $80 including Numbers (http://www.apple.com/iwork/numbers/) (really cool spreadsheet) and Keynote (http://www.apple.com/iwork/keynote/) (which blows away Powerpoint).
Or $100 for 5 computers in the household.

The new version that came out recently actually supports both modes. Word processor or page layout.
And the reading and writing of MS Word files is greatly improved (at least for me.)

I'm guessing Quark is a desktop publisher? Yes, Pages is more like a desktop publisher but it still fills the role of word processor very well...

Two questions:
1. How come there is no publisher alternative for linux which supports ms-publisher files?
2. Does iwork pages 8 support ms-publisher files?
2. Does iwork pages 8 support ms-publisher files?
Pages only supports .doc, .rtf and Appleworks files.

I have 256MB of RAM :p
Been meaning to get a RAM upgrade for a long time :torture:
I expected it to get cheaper and cheaper but I think its hit a brick wall...the frustrating thing is, newer, higher performance RAM is actually cheaper than the older stuff I need :(

There's scribus...I dunno if it supports publisher though. To be fair, I don't think it'd need to because surely if you're using publisher for things its just to go to print or something...?

You have to see what you can produce with it, and how easy it is...
Like we had an assignment in physics and we all just typed it up black and white plain text mostly...my friend had Pages and produced something that liked like a professional brochure for a modern posh restaurant or something :p
I know its overkill but still...

That's exactly right, it's the ease of use and speed and the way the results look for little effort. You don't waste a lot of time trying to make things look right. I had to put together a quick proposal for something last weekend. I put aside 2 hours for it (which is my normal time). But using Numbers, which is probably even cooler than Pages, I made a fantastic looking proposal in half an hour. And then had another hour and a half to waste on ummah.com! :)
And the cool thing is, if you aren't into stealing software (and I'm not), Numbers/Pages/Keynote is only $80 or $100 total for a family with 5 Macs.
And Keynote may be the best program of the 3. I stopped using powerpoint a long time ago.
