View Full Version : Child Birth

I am due to give birth inshallah in the next two weeks. My midwife has told me that listening to relaxing music at the time of child birth can be very pain relieving for a lot of women as it influences the release of endorphins by the pituitary gland. The release of these hormones apparently helps to lessen the pain of childbirth.
Now obviously we know that listening to music is haram, so I suggested to members of my family that perhaps listening to Quran or nazams, etc. would be the perfect substitute. My brother however feels that this may not be acceptable because of the unclean event of childbirth, and he wonders, as do I, if it in fact it would be disrespectful to listen to Quran or religious songs (without music).
Does anyone have any opinions on this, or does anyone know if it is permissible?

As this is a mixed forum I have made the text white - to read it you have to highlight the whole post with your mouse. Sisters only please!
I'm not a scholar. I don't know the answer, I can only tell you what I know which is very limited.
Having a baby means you are not able to pray, same as when you are menstruating, its not haram to listen to Qur'an when you are menstruating afaik, you just don't touch the text, and you recite just for teaching and learning purposes. I have heard of other Muslim women having Qur'an recited during childbirth and in particular surat Maaryam is good for childbirth.inshaAllah.
Also one scholarly opinion is that you can (and some even say should) pray whilst in labour, until the child is half way out. If thats the case, then you can listen to Qur'an. But I repeat, I'm not a scholar! (other scholars say that you stop praying after the waters break, others that you stop if any blood comes out etc)
A really good book for these issues is Our Precious Sprouts. It deals with all baby related issues - childbirth, pregnancy, newborn babies - all according to Qur'an and Sunnah and is written by a very good scholar mashaAllah.
InshaAllah that helps. InshaAllah I didn't confuse you more :S cause I never thought of listening to Qur'an etc when I had my baby - but my husband recited Qur'an to our baby as I was being stitched up in the operating theatre and I could hear him(emergency c-section)

I think you should try reciting Quran whilst you are in labour, it helps focus your mind, obviously when things get mucky, you'll stop but you wont care by then about anything other than getting through it,
inshaallah pm me i'm a doula, i've helped women through labour and had 3 children myself,
kufr do many haram things to try and get through labour we pick and choose whats halal and what works for us,
eg some women chant hindu chants to calm themselves
some video the whole thing....

The Virtues of Pregnancy
* When a woman is pregnant with a child, all the angels will make
Istighfar (repentance) on her behalf. Allah SWT will, for each day of
her pregnancy, write for her 1000 good deeds and erase from her 1000 bad
deeds.
* When a pregnant woman starts to feel the pain from contractions, Allah
SWT will write in her records as someone who is doing jihad (spiritual
or physical struggle) in His path.
* When a woman becomes pregnant by her husband and he is pleased with
her, she obtains the reward of a person engaging in fasting for Allah
SWT and a person spending the night in ibaadah (worship).
* A woman from the time of pregnancy until childbirth and weaning the
baby, is like the Mujahid (someone fighting in the path of Allah, swa)
who is stationed on the frontiers of the Islamic land. If she dies
during this period, she dies the death of a shahid (martyr).
* Two raka'at salaat performed by a pregnant woman is better than 80
raka'at salaat performed by a non-pregnant woman.
* A woman who is pregnant gets the reward of fasting during the day and
of doing ibaadah (worship) during the nights.
* A woman who gives birth gets the reward of 70 years of salaat (prayer)
and fasting. For each vein that feels pain, Allah SWT gives her the
reward of one accepted hajj (Pilgrimage to Makkah).
* If the woman dies within 40 days of giving birth, she will die as a
shahid (matyr).
(Hadith)......."A woman that dies in her virginity or during her
pregnancy or at the time of birth or thereafter (in nifaas) will attain
the rank of a martyr"
Nabi(salalaallahu alayhi wassallam) is reported to have also said
".......When her labour pains commence, the inhabitants of the earth and
the sky are unaware of the stores of comfort that are prepared for her.
When she delivers and breast feeds her child, then she will be granted a
reword for every gulp of milk, if she had to remain awake during the
night for the sake of the child, she will receive the reword of
emancipating seventy slaves in the path of Allah Ta'ala. O Salaamat! Do
you know who these women are? They are pious, upright, with a delicate
nature yet obedient to their husbands and not ungrateful to them"

looooooooooool. :jkk: Hadrat.
Surely many Muslim women would know of halal ways to assist a woman through pregnancy and birth inshallah. My mum went through her first pregnancy in Pakistan. Towards the end of her pregnancy she was regularly fed something which I think was made of nuts fried in ghee and mixed with warm milk and she is sure that it helped make the childbirth go more smoothly. Her grandmother used to give it to her. I'll ask if she has more info on that.

No thats not to help in childbirth. Its mean to be a fattening thing to take to encourage more milk production for the baby.
I know lots of people who recited Quran and listen to it during labour, it really helps. But do check with someone o knowledge if you are unsure.

Endorphins are released by the body in order to engender muscular relaxation.
For most people this means doing whatever relaxes them, candles, husband being soothing, music, lights down, people you trust and so on.
In your case music may well not produce Endorphins if you are worried about religious repurcussions, and worse might produce Adreneline which you definately don't want. Discuss this with the midwife and I am sure she will understand and suggest alternatives.
