As salaamu alaikum
no, not a member, but how many people have kunyahs? You dont have to say but it would be nice to know why you have it cos its not like your real name and most probs if it is common a lot of people will have it.
If you do have one, what is the story behind it, why this name and how many did you have before that one?
And if you dont, would you like one?
Me:
I did have the kunyah Umm Durrah before cos my name in bengali means pearl and so i thought it would be quite a joke cos Umm durrah means Mother of pearl which is something else as well :p (you had to be there for it to be funny) anyways me and .: Anna :. chose this one for me but then after i was like "im not my own mother eww" so it didnt last long.
Then i was thinking what name would suit me, and i realised that every time i read surah Yusuf it makes me want to cry :crying: and i always wanted to name my son yusuf as well so i finally decided Umm Yusuf :D and i like it!
I know some people name their kunyah's after scholars, like me sister likes reading things from Shaykh AbdulMuhsin, so shes now Umm Muhsin.
I wanted Umm Taymiyyah but i know a sister called that and i think it would be too weird if i called myself Umm abdul wahab :p or if i named myself after a Da'ee like Umm Abu Usamah or Umm Abu Suhayb @) LOL
so yeah thats my life story now tell me yours.

Asalaamu 'alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
My kunya as you know is Umm Yusuf (same as you niqaabis *thumbs up*). I chose it because I love the name Yusuf and I also love the surah in the Qur'an.
I used to think it was weird if sisters who aren't married, give themselves a kunya that was an umm but I didn't like the idea of my real name being all over the web so I chose the name umm Yusuf. Plus, when i first signed on to ummah and another forum, i didn't know how strict the forums where in terms of upholding islamic values of no freemixing so I decided to be on the safe side and sign on with an "umm" kunya.
I also go by the kunya umm Rumaan because it was Aishah's (raddiyallahu 'anha) mother's name and I've always liked it Masha Allah.
:wswrwb:
ummghazi
because ghazi is my eldest sons english name translated in arabic

Abû Hurayrah relates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Use my name when naming yourselves but do not use my kunyah as a kunyah for yourselves.”
Muhammed (saws) Kunyah was Abu Al-Qasim.

Abu Muslim

The name is Muslim, Abu Muslim. I have the license to kill [homos] and I like it both shaken and stirred [my tea]
Although I'm not quite an Abu [father] yet though, actually come to think about it, a whole load of people on this forum are actually old enough to be my parents..thats a bit worrying.

I think its kinda pretentious unless you actually have a kid. I mean my mum has a kunya (with her my eldest siblings name) but nobody ever calls her it really. I've noticed alot of young muslims these days going under the alias of one and often i'll ask them something about the kid- who im assuming they have becos of the kunya and they're like : nah aint got no kids and im thinking, well what is the point then?! In those cases, its sounds and feels seriously fake imo.
Personally speaking, i'd just prefer it if people refered to my first name or Ms [surname]. Besides kunyas are not really commonly used amongst somalis really. Not in my experience anyways.

Its-- sorry stopped typing cos a massive spider just ran across the room  Now its in the bathroom under the bath tub :nervous:
Anyway, kunyahs aren't about the child as such, in some arab cultures everyone's got a kunyah even as a child...its just what arabs use as nicknames...

Lol @ spider. You call yourself a brother.......pfft! get those sandals outside of your loo and smack it one :torture:wimp!
as for kunyahs, i know in arab culture its common but still i think its weird. To me its logical, Umm means mum and Abu means dad and if you aint actually a mum or dad yet then whats the point, especially if your a kid yourself. Anyhow its a free world, people can do what they like ;)

And yeah as niqaabi said kunyahs aren't just about the children...like the sahaba "Abu Hurayrah", he wasn't literally a father of a cat (astaghfirullah  )they just use something to do with them and make it a nick name. He was called that cos he loved cats...

-Rashid yep like this one too masha Allah :D
Narrated Sahl bin Sad
The most beloved names to 'Ali was Abu Turab, and he used to be pleased when we called him by it, for none named him Abu Turab (for the first time), but the Prophet . Once 'Ali got angry with (his wife) Fatima, and went out (of his house) and slept near a wall in the mosque. The Prophet came searching for him, and someone said, "He is there, lying near the wall." The Prophet came to him while his ('Ali's) back was covered with dust. The Prophet started removing the dust from his back, saying, "Get up, O Abu Turab! ( oh father of the dust ) "
Sahih Al-Bukhari

I used to be actually known as this kunya at one point, during my teens. It means Mother of Lions or Mother of Wolves (according to some). As I grew up, I grew out of it. I simply prefer my own name now :D

Assalaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatuulah
As far as I am aware , it is infact sunnah to give your child ( when their born) a nice nickname. I am no aware of the daleel , but will try to find it. That is why I have a kunya, and I also prefer children to call me by my kunya , incase they might mention my name infront of their dad,etc
Also the name of a woman is her HONOUR. Not to mention that in some forms of sihr (magic) he name of the woman and her mothers name is used , thats why it is a woman's honuor. So that is also why it is the tradition in some cultures to refer to the woman not by her first name , but by her kunya.
I always teach my yunger sister to give her kunya when people on the street ask her for her name.
Apparently I was also told that Shaykh AbdulWahhab's wife used to be referred to as Ghariba ( The stranger) as they hardly ever saw her out. MashaAllah
