Ruling on Jihaad for the Women
By Shaykh Naasir ibn Hamad al-Fahd May Allah swt free him from the prisons of the Tawagheet
Question:
Assalamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,
How does a woman involve herself in Jihaad? And does a woman leave for Jihaad without permission of her parents? I request an answer, and is Jihaad in my case offensive or defensive? And jazakumullah khayr.
Answer:
Wa 'alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, to proceed:
The origin is that a woman has no jihaad upon her, however her going out with the Mujahideen to help the injured and to deliver water and other necessities like this, then in the hadeeth of Ibn 'Abbas, in the collection of Muslim, the Messenger sallallahu 'alayhi wa salam used to go out in battles with women and they would help the injured and organise the booty, and in the hadeeth of Umm 'Atiyyah: "We used to battle with the Messenger of Allah sallallahu 'alayhi wa salam, and would heal the sick, and treat the injured and we would be given some of the war booty". Likewise, it is permissable for her to openly fight in the fields in some cases, like Safiyyah bint 'Abdulmutallib did with the Jew who encircled her safe haven, when she hit him with a pole, she killed him. And undoubtedly there is a need for permission from the guardian and the presence of a mahram in the offensive jihaad and the jihaad of defense if it does not become obligatory upon women, however if it does become obligatory then those things are not compulsory, like Safiyyah did when she feared the Jewish man, so she came down from her fortress and grabbed a pole and hit him with it, and so she killed him.
And Allah knows best."
