Salaam
Im supposed to be praying Istikhara for a guy ive known for 2 years... i cant take a haraam relationship (which we used 2 talk online from time to time) any longer so we've decided to get married inshaAllah if all goes well...
anyway i have some questions that i NEED answers for before i start otherwise ill jus get confused..
1. if you pray istikhara salah and then say one word to someone.. will it still count?
2. when you wake up for Fajr salah and then have a dream after that, does that still count as ur istikhara?
3. do i NEED to do it if 2 members of his family are doing it anyway?
4. if i do it and he does it and his comes out positive and mine negative, what does this mean?
5. are there any specific surahs that are recommended to recite in the istikhara salah?
6. how long should i do it for? do you need to have an exact amount of nights you should carry it on for or is it just until u have a clear result?
7. if both results are negative, is it an option to try again later in the year or something? would it come out the same?
thats a lot of questions.. i'd really be tankful if someone could answer all of them, if not just a few? j/k/k
Surely after two years you must be guided in one direction or the other as to whether he is a suitable marriage partner for you?
If the result is negative as mentioned in point seven then take that as a sign. You can not dismiss it as it is a sign from Allah. You asked for guidance via the prayer and you mentioned receiving two negative outcomes, remember to trust Allah whatever the outcome, He knows what is best.

Wa Alaykum Asalam,
1.if you pray istikhara salah and then say one word to someone.. will it still count?
When you pray your salah there should be no interaction with anything or anyone else, because you are praying to Allah, whether its a fardh prayer to whether its sunnah, we should have khusu3' in our salah, concentration and connection with our lord, we are praying to Him, praising Him, and asking of Him !
2.when you wake up for Fajr salah and then have a dream after that, does that still count as ur istikhara?does that still count as ur istikhara?
When people do Istikhara they tend to look for a dream but there is no authenticity to show that we need to have a dream as if it were revelation, SubhanAllah, that only belongs to the prophet (saw)!!
The Istikhara prayer is you asking Allah for guidance in an area, i.e. marriage; if it be good for you, the doors be open for you and if not then allah take it from you and give you better. Only Allah knows, and you trust in Allah, hence you turning to Him, making this Istikhara prayer!
We may get a dream and we feel strongly on it, it may just be something that happens that makes us realise this is *thumbs up* for me or *thumbs down*. We dont know. Keep on making dua to Allah, making Istikhara if you still feel uncertain, but remember that before you do your Istikhara make sure your intention is that Allah will give you whats best and He is the one who plans ! Open your mind, if you dont, then you're being biased to your feelings, you must think, are you actually handing this matter over to Allah to decide(?)... Put feelings aside and ask of Allah, He will give what you expect of Him.
3. do i NEED to do it if 2 members of his family are doing it anyway?
There is no better person to make dua for yourself other than yourself , the same applies for Istikhara, because you will have the most sincerity in asking for this matter as you feel it most! If you want Allah's help, ask of Him.
4. if i do it and he does it and his comes out positive and mine negative, what does this mean?
Allahu Alam, but you shouldn't be having contact with the brother for it to be like 'i made istikhara and mines postive, what about yours?'. Trust in Allah! Know that He will help you-be persistant in your worship and make loads of dua and pray Istikhara if you feel uncertain. If yours is negative, it may be that something in it will not be good for you-only Allah knows. While his is positive, it might not be that way for him, but you both do not know the future. Only Allah knows best !
5. are there any specific surahs that are recommended to recite in the istikhara salah?
Allahu Alam, I am not sure about this.
But in salah, you should try to select surahs you can contemplate over (I know all surahs are beautiful) but I mean, an example, if you feel hardship, recite surah Ash-Sharh, we can contemplate that ''with every hardship comes relief'', then in your salah you will have more khushu3', more concentration & connection with Allah InshAllah !
6. how long should i do it for? do you need to have an exact amount of nights you should carry it on for or is it just until u have a clear result?
Again Allahu Alam ( I remember hearing something about doing it seven times) however, this does not limit or maximise the amount you can carry out Istikhara prayer, Allah is always there to hear the prayer-Alhamdulilah !
7. if both results are negative, is it an option to try again later in the year or something? would it come out the same?
The meaning of result is to end in a particular way- so it wouldn't make sense to come back etc - Is not like a trial... However should something happen in the future, i.e. you ''bump into'' each other again and marriage pops up, then it is all part of Allah's plan, Maybe Allah was testing your love for Him (subhanahu wa ta ala) through your patience and consistency in worship etc -Allahu Alam...Then I guess in this situation its different and you would need to make Istikhara because previously your 'result' seemed negative and now the situation has reappeared. Allah knows why, what and how, so therefore you turn to Him InshAllah!
May Allah grant you patience and guide you to that which is best for you, Ameen.
InshAllah hope I helped a little :)
