salaamu aleykum wrwb,
Hope uz are all doing well n are in the best health&imaan inshAllah,
I have a minor problem, well i say problem but its more a decision..InshAllah ill start now....
I work in retail in central London, its busy, many people cum 2 shop, and most of all the shop is forever playing music....Alhamdullilah iv like recently started practicing (im not a revert...jus very misguided) and iv realised that the music is affecting me....iv stopped listenin 2 music but i find dat when im about 2 pray or am just alone with my thoughts i tend to hear the music in my head, and obviously it upsets me alot since i dont even enjoy it.
I really do wanna quit but the problem is that i dont wanna upset my mum....shes a sweet lady and all, but she wont see it like i do. She thinks that i take religion abit too far and iv becum 2 religious 2 quickly and so on...For any1 who has got Somalian parents ull probably understand...anyways i reallly dont wanna argue with my mum cuz i have made hints about it once n i could tell that she wants me to stick to it...shes not being horrible or nothing but shes been stressd out about money this past month...plus shes paying for my tuition fees..newayz has any1 been in my situation....where work was kinda affecting ur imaan? n what did u do about it...
Jk Khair in advance

My current job plays music and yes does distract me a lot! But I get my Lunch break when it's Duhur time and a break for Asr time. Maybe you could try praying salat during your breaks and would make you stay focused and early int he morning after fajr make sincere du'a that Allah helps you stay on the right path and helps your day be of ease.
I'm saving up for starting uni this September and I guess you have to do what you can do to get the money. However didn't you apply for a Tuition Fee Grant if you have a low income of £17,000 or less? Your tuition fees would be paid for and you can get a bursary of £300+ depending on what uni you go to.
With rushing too quick with the deen is probably what it seems from your mums point of view because you got butterflies in your stomach about the deen and can't believe you've missed it soo much. That's how I felt when I started practicing laakin you mum has to understand you seeming 'extreme' is a lot better then you being off the rails out 24/7.
Again I can understand being Somali that some mums can be a lil softy on the deen I mean will do the 5times a day etc but when you wanan wear niqaab or desperately wanna go to every single lecture they like woaaahhh I don't want you brainwashed watch yourself etc.
My advice to you is make dhikr when you can, know that Allah is watching you, keep up with you salaat and if it's still too much to handle then try getting another job however much it may be hard but you don't wanna comprimise your deen for it do you?

Salaam alaikum.
Try to avoid it as much as you can i mean the music, i can imagine when you are too intresting on deen (wich is good think btw) then you wanna learn and wanna learn very fast its good but need time to refull all in guick.
Your mom is just trying to be helpfull, i can understand somalian moms, when you are too westerned they wanna hold you back and when you become too religios they wanna hold you back too confusing but what can you o about it.
Do what you see is best for you about your job, when you life in London you hear the music from every place, every corner so i dont know what to say about that.
All the best for you walaalo
Allah bless you and all the muslim inshAllah :)

Ask your university if they do bursaries. If you successfully get the maintenance grant for the full amount then you will get a bursary of at least £300 depending ont he uni you go to as it varies. For more recognised elite uni's such as Kings, Lse, xford etc you get more than others such as hertfordshire, westminster etc. Some places such as QM, give £1000! Can be a years worth of travel!
my work has music too but ive learned to just ignore its like i dont even hear it anymore cuz i zone out completely and wen ur actually doing work and focusing on work (i do retail too) or just chatting with coworkers then u prolly shouldnt even be hearing the music
the music is so horrible i dont even know how i managed to ignore it. i think its a gift :hidban:

It's tough, I don't know the ruling with working int hat environment during ramadan. I am just gonan do dhikr and keep a mind set that Allah is watching and not let shaytaan whisper. Like a challlenge:D see if you can get through the day without being distracted. Plus you'll be fasting so you'll be too tired working to even bother. Just don't forget to pray your salat an try fit it around lunch breaks so they don't cut you pay off.
InshAllah I wil keep you in my sincerist du'as as well as all the othe rmuslims working in similar environments and worse!

Assalam Alaykum,
Many 'Ulama have advised people to stay away from jobs like that as, even if you don't think it, the music affects you some way or another. I pray that Allah makes it easy for you to find another job.
Ameen.

Man i know how you feel, i used to work in Cromwells Madhouse on weekends, and all they used to play in there was Justin Timberlake. It drove me nuts. I dont know how the other people coped, but i didnt like it. Before i used to work in Next, in there we played Jungle music... i could handle that coz at least you can dance to it and all that and its got a feel good feeling.
Anyway youll only avoid music in retail i nthe big departmental stores, like Debenhams, or John Lewis, or Harrods, or Selfridges.. they dont need crap music to keep their customers and sell their goods.

If you got an mp3 player take with you, listen to that instead of the music they play at the shop. Don't put in on full blast though, just put on to the volume that will stop your hearing the music.

It was for me, my first day in Sainsbury’s (when I was 17 ish :p) I was asked to handel alcohol but Hamazh refused and walked out of the job there and then!
I’m glad I did because I would have missed Jummah that day , I made dua and then I got a job in a computer warehouse – like a week later

Assalamu Alaykum,
When you leave something which consists of things that are againt the commands of Allah, Allah makes all things easy for you.
I remember knowing of someone who used to work in a bank, which is haram. Her excuse was that if she left, she wpuld have nowhere else to work, it's so hard to get a job.
Then, around the same time, I read of a similar icident on a Islamic Q&A site, and the answer that was gven by a Mufti Sahib was beautiful.
He gave an example of the Sahabahs, those who before Islam were surrounded by jahaalat. They had wealth, everything, yet when it was time to decide whether to take on Islam as their religion or not, they took it wholeheartedly, not knowing of what theire future would be, knowing that their parents will no longer keep them in their homes if they brought the faith of Muhammad (peace be upon him) yet, as soon as they embraced Islam Allah gave them everything.
We just have to leave it in Allah's hands. make a good intention when leaving and insha'Allah after that, one will think, if only I left that job earlier.

Alhamdulilah that's good that you've been able to get a job so quickly.
I avoided supermarket jobs from beginning hence why I;ve had to turn down so many job offers because of their lack of co-operation when i said I can't do such and such.
I buste dmy guts out 2years to finally alahamdulilah with sabr and du'a to get 2 jobs which both allow me to commit to my religious obligations. One of them does play music yes, but i block it out.
For the sis she was asking in regards to the music and if she can't find a job easily then she should just stay there and do her best to block it out and if she can't then quick. I don't think she should quit there and then because she may be helping to support her family. If i didn't have this job i'd be walking to uni which is like 15/20miles as I have no savings or money or nothing!
Everyone is in different circumstances, so just think about that first.
