It was common practice for girls to be betrothed as infants among the christians and jews as well. The marriage would not be consumated until after the girl had gone through her first menses. This was nothing that was unique to Islam alone
In a world where the average life span was perhaps 30, it made sense for women to be breeding at the first opportunity to ensure that she was around to be there for the next generation.
