Salams,

Why are so many ppl insistent on having their nikkah performed by the imaam or an imaam - Any muslim man can perform the Nikkah, even ur own father or uncle.... is it a cultural hang up or some other reason?

Maybe Cause they Know the Imam knows how to Perform the Nikaah in the manner of Rasul :saw: whereas a father/uncle may or may not know how tro perform the Nikaah!

Imams seem to possess a certain aura of qualification, wheras if you get your abu jee or uncle jee to do it or even your dumois bro if yer desperate , you know theyre gonna mess it up :o

imams know the nikah sermon
and folks like doing nikah in mosques in front of a congregation, so makes sense to get imam to do it

there is barakah in a pious person performing the nikaah.

It is more likely that a Mawlana will know the khutbah of nikah and more aware of the correct wording.

At the time of marriage the age of Hadhrat Faatimah (radhiallahu anha) was fifteen and half years and that of Hadhrat Ali (radhiallahu anhu) was twenty one years. After accepting Hadhrat Ali's (radiallahu anhu) proposal, Rasululiah (sallaliaahu alayhi wasallam) ordered Hadhrat Anas (radiallahu anhu), "O Anas, go and call Abu Bakr, Umar. Uthmaan, Talhaa, Zuhair and a group among the Ansaar, "

The people sent for by Nabi-e-Kareem (sallalaahu alayhi wasallam) presented themselves and Rasululiah (sallaliaahu alayhi wasallam) recited a khutbah and performed the Nikah. From this example, it is clear that the most suitable person to perform the Nikah is the father of the bride.

From..the abstract above..we can say the brides dad is the most suitable..
but of coz..any man who knows how to perform nikkah can do it..no need to have an imaam present..

this holiness business i find is a very christian concept - like christian priests etc are "holier" than the avg person.

Being an Imam of Masjid, doesn't make u "Holier" than a bride's father for example.

we should be careful with the words we use.

I think you misunderstood him... a father on average hasn't got a clue how to perform the Nikkah...

whereas almost Every Imaam knows how to perform the Nikkah correctly...
