Scheduled for 11 July 2007 at the London Muslim Centre, a prominent line of speakers will examine the injustices meted out to 'terrorism suspects' through detention and house arrest without fair trial, based on accusations often arising from unverifiable secret evidence.

The speakers, Gareth Peirce (prominent human rights lawyer), Muddassar Arani (who defended many so-called terrorist suspects), Moazzem Begg (former Guantanamo Bay detainee), Dr Kamal Helbawy (prominent Muslim scholar and consultant on Islamic affairs), Shami Chakrabati (director of liberty), Mouloud Sihali (former detainee) among others, will also draw links between control orders, detentions, and other anti-terrorism measures – in particular, how extending pre-charge detention and the proposed new 'stop and question' powers will intensify the climate of fear, especially for Muslim communities.

The organisers are aiming for a large community audience, where experts and those who have experienced illegal detention can share their experiences and discuss strategies to counter the growing infringement of individual liberties and human rights.
Detention Without Trial: Lives in Limbo in Britain is co-sponsored by the London Muslim Centre and supported by Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers, Peace and Justice in East London, Muslim Safety Forum, Islamic Human Rights Commission, The 1990 Trust and Islamic Forum Europe.

Since 2001, successive anti-terror laws have impacted heavily on ethnic minorities and on Muslims, mainly on refugees but also on British citizens. They have been kept in various forms of detention without trial, including partial house arrest under control orders, detention without charge for up to 28 days, and prison or house arrest pending deportation, possibly to torture. Campaigners have been giving the detainees practical support and demand that they be released immediately.

* The injustices meted out to \'terrorism suspects\' by the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC), detention and house arrest without fair trial, based on accusations often arising from secret evidence.

* The government\'s current threat to re-introduce internment, this time for British as well as foreign \'terrorism suspects\', following difficulties in the use of control orders.

* The dangers and impact of the new proposed\"Stop and Quiz\" power. The government seeks to give the police power to stop and interrogate anyone in public places. The right to \"no comment\"would no longer be valid and anyone refusing to respond to police questioning could be arrested.

* The links between control orders, detentions and other anti-terrorism measures; in particular how lengthy pre-charge detention and the proposed new \'stop and question\' power will intensify the climate of fear, especially for Muslim communities

* The need for a speedy and fair trial, or release without charge for all suspects in terrorism cases; and how to build support for this demand amongst Muslim and non-Muslim communities.

* The need for immediate day-to-day solidarity with detainees and their families, and how people can get involved.

This was as heart wrenching as ever. You know when you go to such events and it is the same speakers about similar issues, you think you would become passive but every single time I hear the stories of our brothers and sisters being oppressed it just brings you to tears. :( Alhumdulillah, it softens the heart which is something we all need. :)

May Allah(swt) hasten the release of our brothers and sisters. Ameen!
