Wa Alaikum wa Assalam,

The whiteness is actually natural yeast.

It is clearly visible on grapes but is also present on oranges and apples, etc. but not always clearly visible as in grapes.

It does you no harm so washed or otherwise you can consume it- it is not farmer's chemical pesticide.

Yeast is also used for baking bread and alcohol ie. wine made from grapes.

:wswrwb: yea ur right ukhti, u have to wash them well, i was watching a green grocer taking in his supply of fruit from the suppliers once and on the box of grapes wa sa "warning that said wash well before use "and yes ur right its due to pesticides they use. I dont know if the white residue has anything to do with it, but even when u buy granny smith apples they are sometimes so highly waxed u have to rinse them in warm water to get rid of the oiliness, the worst ones are those highly polished red american apples, theyre just covered in horrible oily/waxy stuff and theyre soft in the middle, as if theyre going off, anyway just wash all ur fruit well insha Allah .

No actually your right- I am sure that there is a deeper explanation as to its origin and purpose (like with cells, germs, molecules) and why it forms on fruit as it does but Mr. Harding just taught us what he thought was going to come up in the test so I am not aware of the answer as to where it comes from.

If you have an interest in this try some Science sites.

this is exactly why wine connosieurs(sp) prefer this year over that one. The yeast is a little different each year and it affects the taste of the wine. Real wine uses the natural yeast that is on grapes while cheap wine boils the grapes, adds sugar and cultured yeast to make sure it tastes exactly the same every time.
Yeast is one of the most common mold spores that there are and will grow on anything that has sugar in it. The human body also has yeast covering it

Na'am there is pure grape juice available in most superstores.

With regards to seedless grapes man what happens is that its a natural genetic malfunction ie. they just grow that way whereas they're not meant to and man has not interfered at all so not GM engineered.

Na'am the pure grape juices are halal- no alcoholic content whatsoever.

Nope there is no side effects with seedless grapes as a natural occurance happens in them and the seeds are not manually extracted in any way.

Am I right in understanding that mould is a form of fungus i.e. as in mushrooms, etc?

mold is a form of fungus and it is in the same family as mushrooms but it is a primitive form of fungi. Fungi are divided into two categories ie cultures that have fruiting bodies ie mushrooms and those that don't ie molds and stuff like that. Some mycologists refer to molds as fungi imperfecti because they behave more like bacteria in the way that they reproduce then proper fungi like mushrooms.
Yeast is one of the number 1 contaminants in mushroom farming simply because it is everywhere. Growing mushrooms used to be a hobby of mine :D

Too be halal, grape juice must be either fresh or it has been pasteurized to kill the yeast and bottled while hot(commercially available grape juice is done exactly like that) If, after making fresh juice, you allow it to sit at room temperature for more then a day or two, you will see frothing on the top and you might even be able to taste a hint of the alcohol already produced
