What is the best method of teaching young children how to memorise surahs/duas, etc? My daughters are now three years old and know the basics eg the three Quls and Surah Faatihah.
I want to teach them more surahs but wondered if anyone had ideas/tips on the best way to do this? What are your experiences of teaching children surah's?

i think the Primary thing! to do is identify HOW your children actually learn for example so children learn well by listening and can listen to somethign a few times and memorise it, or others by Reading, or writing
then after you have identified that teach them in that way
so ya3nee if they learn by audio..play it for them over and over inshAllah..and encourage them to listen to you when you are praying or you can recite for them inshAllah
and if they are visual learners u can buy them Large posters with it or books that they can look at (actually i just remembered they are 3 lool okay maybe this when they get older)
umm i think inshAllah audio...or repition should be the best ways inshAllah:up:
and may Allah (swt) rewrad you for starting on them so early:inlove:

lol i was just teachin ma bro the duah for forgiveness yesterday :D but he learnt the one that umm salamah said,
"The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: 'There is no Muslim who suffers a calamity and says what Allaah has commanded: "Innaa Lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raji'oon, Allaahumma ujurni fi museebati w'ukhluf li khayran minha," but Allaah will compensate him with something better.' When Abu Salamah died, I said, 'Who among the Muslims could be better than Abu Salamah, the first household to migrate to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)?' Then I said [this du'aa'] and Allaah compensated me with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). He sent Haatib ibn Abi Balta'ah on his behalf to ask for my hand in marriage, but I said, 'I have a daughter, and I am a jealous woman.' He said, 'As for your daughter, we will pray to Allaah to make her independent, and I will pray to Allaah to take away your jealousy.'" (Reported by Muslim, 1525).
and then as soon as he learnt it a lil while later he asked me if he could have some cake, but it was like his bedtime so i said no :p so outta the blue he starts sayin Innaa Lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raji'oon, Allaahumma ujurni fi museebati w'ukhluf li khayran minha n i burst out laffin and ask him why he said that...and he was like well u said i couldnt have any cake so i said so Allah gives me sumt better :rofl1: mashaAllah well cute :D:D:D:D
mashaAllah he picks things up really quick, all i gotta do is say a line then get him to repeat it til he says it properly with no mistakes then we move onto the next line and he says that until theres no mistakes then he repeats eveythin hes learnt til theres no mistakes and then we go onto the next new line :hidban:

The following ebook is an interview Muhammad al-Shareef did with one mother who worked with her daughter and completed the Quran at age 7! It's an AMAZING read! A must for anyone who wants to memorize Qur'an, or help their child memorize.

Soooo cute, Masha allah! I think my 2 are a bit young to repeat stuff after me, they will sit with me for all of six minutes then they're bored and want to move onto something else! Though I can't help thinking if I was singing they would sit sit me for longer, they absolutely adore anything with a tune!

masha allah sis this is good u have taught them that already at age three its a really good start  insha allah this will help them in future as ur getting them in the habit young. i think if u play surahs and listen to them in ur house while they are around they will pick up things perhaps with less effort. for example if u play some of the other short surahs alot, wen u come 2 teach it for them, it may be subconsiously in their mind already making it easier for them?
i was also thinking for kids if u fix a certain number of ayahs per day and get them in the habit insha allah. like for the very small ones maybe one ayah? if they have learned fatiha, and 3 quls they may be capable to do this insha allah.. wat method did u learn for those other surahs? if that one worked mayb u cn continue.
also wat about getting hifdh log book from learning roots, it has star stickers and is colourful and all which would appeal 2 them insha allah.
let us kno wat techniques u end up using n which ways r successful, im sure it will b useful for others
also welcome 2 the forum sis! i didnt see u around before today, hav u done an intro post?
LOL! mashaAllah very cute random! :) Bit of a smart cookie too it seems ;)

LOL, I didnt do a welcome post, just jumped right in!! Been on here for about a week now and loving it so far, Alhamdulillah :)
With regards to the surahs my girls know already, I read them loudly to them every night before they go to sleep. After reading every night till they were around two ish, they started to murmer along or hum along with me. After a few more months they were able to say some of the words fully, and now they know the full surahs Alhamdulillah.
I have now started reading some duas and also ayat ul kursi at bedtimes, in the hope they will memorise these in the same way. Unfortunately if you read too much they get bored and the bedtime routine becomes too long for them :(
Which is why I am after more tips/ideas. I have been looking at the learning roots series, maybe will order some when we get back to the UK insha allah :) Jazakillah khair for your ideas.

hmm yeh i see it will become too much... mayb u cn try it in the daytime like a couple of ayahs repeating it and trying to get them to say it? if u get the hifdh book mayb u cn make it like an activity for them, like a bit of a game?
the danger with giving too much to learn is that they cd forget those ones they already learned so best mayb to keep it small in the start?
another q, kind of off topic bt are these ur first kids? if so, how did u find it having twins as the first? difficult or did u jst adapt 2 it okay?

Alhamdulillah we're doing ok :) They are my first kids, yes, and it was all quite difficult to start with. Everything is double the effort, double the workload, and double the tears! The early months are always very dificult, I had the added problem of not having family close by to help me out, but what didnt break me made me stronger, Alhamdulillah, and we have turned our children into little globetrotters as we travel with them so much now :)
