..how big a sin is listening to music?

When I read some of the hadiths out there about music, it makes me think that it will keep you hell forever!

Few examples of what I mean-

In one hadith, Muhammed(pbuh) said the people who listen to music will turn into apes and swines. And Allah(swt) describes the people who will turn into apes and swines as the "rejected ones".

It also says that music instrument belongs to shaytan. Would this make the music listeners with Shaytan on day of judgment?

In the Qur'an ayah, Allah(swt) says that they will suffer a "humilating torment". As far as my knowledge goes, everytime Allah(swt) speaks about the destination of the people of hell, he speaks about the eternel one.(if you know what i mean)

In another hadith, someone said that singing makes hypocrisy grows in the heart. Hypocrites are in hell forever, no?

There are few other hadiths which makes me think that, but i can't quite remmeber it now.

Anyway, please don't turn this into wether music is haram or halal debate.

It's not a major sin but your still going to be punished for it regardless.

Well it depends what you Gonna call Music and why you are listening to it right ?

IF I hear a Bird singing a tune in the morning and like it , it does not mean i am going to hell does it ?

Now the Quran Itself when recited the Qaari uses a Musical Scale as in a tune ? right or wrong ? so that is not Haram either is it ?

NAtional anthems ? Children School recitations ? whatever .

We need to be more precise and not just rule everything out .

Did you haer for instance Shiekh Sudais ?

If you Know the arabic Music scales you will immediately Know he is using a scale we Call رست or رصد . rusd or rust .

Its a knowledge that most people dont know bro :) .

If you heard the Egyptian Qaari's who are Geniuses in this knowledge and the most beautiful voices you will also begin to understand how they change the Melodies as per arabic music scales .

when the quran and sunnah makes something halal or haram, there is no ijtihad or qiyaas needed. the sunnah clearly makes music haram, so what are you saying it is not haram ?..

Stop playing around with words, you know exactly what he means by music, and that doesn't include bird song, whales singing, monkeys chattering...

If you want to include bird song into music, why not include human speech? They are essentially the same.

In which case 'music' becomes a truly general term.

Al faqeer said it rite here... it's musical instruments which are haraam.

al faqeer, tunes used by Qaris, birds singing, etc are more precisely classified as melody not music.

It shouldn't be an issue of whether it is a big sin or not, knowing it is a sin should be enough.

Finally someone offering common sense , No its not but its part of music , so not everything related to Music is Haram .

bro... I think ppl r here referring to Musical instruments being haraam. not musical tones if i read the thread correctly.

btw..
Melody:
1 : a sweet or agreeable succession or arrangement of sounds : TUNEFULNESS (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/tunefulness)
2 : a rhythmic succession of single tones organized as an aesthetic whole

Music is not only Instruments a Voice singing is also music right ?

And like I explained if I take Shiekh Sudais Style of read reading which is رست I can sing 1000 different arabic songs from that very scale :) .

It doesnt make it wrong to read the Quran with the same scale .

But problem is people dont understand that deep .

Anyways you can always learn something new .

Oh And Le Croyant انت عارف إنه مؤذنين الحزم المكي والمدني بيتعلموا المقامات الموسيقية العربية أول ؟

Are national anthems halal? Surely, the words used play a big part in saying if it's ok or not. Take for example God Save the Queen - would you consider that halal?

Plus, that is music with instruments so I don't see how you can say it isn't haram?

The words for the Saudi one is fine but they don't they too sometimes use intruments?

I think the issue is pretty obvious, isn't it?

When you walk down the street, little bits of pork don't just fly into your mouth.

But when you walk down the street, or go into a store, you almost always hear instrumental music.

So, clearly, God isn't going to give you some rule that's impossible to obey.

From what I understand, there are different kinds of haram...

Hearing music, for example, doesn't invalidate wudu.

Cats are haram for eating, but you can have them as pets.

Sex itself isn't haram, but sex outside marriage is haram.

you are right there . regarding hearing music does not invalidate wudu I would say it must be unintentional .
