Lift essential seems to be must to some people here
In this place most lift has got a man sitting on a tiny bench in front of the switches... so funny it looks.. you got to tell him ' i want to go to this floor' ...Imgaine if 3/4 people enters and all they are asking it's lik e
'LIFT MARKET' all shouting in a tiny place:rolleyes:
I wouldn't mind those poles they have in firestations, it would be so fun :hidban:...but only to come down though :p
You took the stairs simply because a woman got on? Some of you lot take "khulwah" too literally.

I see all people do these days is take the "literal" reading on anything and apply it without looking at the context and situations in which it is applicable. There are flexibilities within these things.
But if you are talking about the problem with lifts - unless its broken and you ned to go up floors; thats a pain in the rear. Going down is much easier!

Mashallah ibn suleman, it's nice to see brothers who take these type of things to heart.
May Allah(swt) reward you with Jannah. Ameen.
there's a hadith to the effect: when a man and a woman are alone, shaytan is the third person present.
after hearing this hadith, it is said that Abu bakr [ra] never remained alone even with his own daughter ayesha [ra].
it's all down to a persons level of taqwa.

But is that not pre-empting or suggesting that men/walking are walking sex machines and anything to do with them is sexual - does it not automatically lead to thinking inappropriately (and wrongly) of the other person and their intentions? Or even doubting yourself.
I dont think khulwah applies to being present with those who consider you their mahram. Thats highly problematic considering the purpose of being a mahram and those things you are responsible for.
Do you see the khulwah issue's problem amongst mahrams?

I often take the stairs because I hate sharing lifts with people.
Actually I feel the same about all forms of public transport and sometimes private transport.
It's just a personal space thing.
Not because I have some terrible self control problem, or that I'm worried about having to fend off women overcome by my incredible animal magnetism. :D
Like seven said it's down to the level of a person's taqwa.
Why would someone consider khulwah amongst those who fall under their guardianship as mahram? Thats not a measure of someones taqwa.
Why would someone consider khulwah amongst those who fall under their guardianship as mahram? Thats not a measure of someones taqwa.
it's a measure of how far people are willing to go to obey the words of the Prophet :saw: ...and no one can claim to have more love of the Prophet :saw: than abu bakr [ra]

Thats not addressing my point. Obeying the Prophet (saw) does not mean blind obedience. He (saw) did not state the condition of khulwah to exist between or within mahrams, that was the above sahabahs (ra) interpretation and application of it.
Your point was: You stated khulwah to the degree of existing even in the presence of those who would deem you to be their mahram.
Do you not see the problem with that kind of an injuction?
I have on at least one occasion let a man go in a lift alone and waited for the lift to come back down to me, which the man probably found strange.
there is no injunction of khulwah with mahrams.... i'm not saying that stay away from being alone with mahrams... because that is clearly allowed.
however, some people (eg. abu bakr [ra]) are on a level such that they will stay away from anything that has the remotest chance of leading to fitna.... and this is down to their taqwa.
I've heard non-Muslim women saying that they never get into a lift with a man for fear of being molested, let alone Muslim women.

I still dont see what taqwa has to do with avoiding being alone with your mahram should you get "strange thoughts" about them in your head. That infers that blood/milk kinship (as in brother-sister,mother-son,father-daughter etc) doesn't over-ride carnal desires. Is that what you are stating with your example? The potential for incest that could arise from being in khulwah with mahrams?
Some would argue the highest level of taqwa is complete seclusion from everything and everyone. But we term those people as "sufi's" (or hermits, take your pick of terminology)
So where does one draw the line? Being in a lift with a stranger for the amount of time it takes to reach your floor ( seconds) is considered wrong and the person is sinning? Where does control and self restraint come into this? Isnt the fact that you are aware of being alone with this said stranger in a lift to do with your awareness of khulwah and its conditions and purpose and hence the "thoughts" about the person rather than something enticing you and driven solely by shaytaan?

I agree that some people are touchy, so much so that they even want to question the sahabah radhiallahu ta'aala anhum ajmaeen
No one was saying what you're implying, see sevens post (http://www.ummah.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1916133&postcount=45)
But where the sahabah ridhwaanullahi alayhim ajmaeen are mentioned people should hold their tongues, if it was just any ordinary person then yeah you could maybe say something.
Why do people hold the Sahabah (raa) to be infallible? The problem here isn't with my opinion of the sahabah and what they did or didnt do. Its with people like yourself who become prickly when someone wants something clarified. And in this case it is the point which Seven put forward and you agreed with - which just happened to include a Sahabah.
I did read Seven's post - and hitherto my point of the issue of blood kinship to not over-ride carnal desires. That is what observing khulwah with your mahram (to lead to a higher level of taqwa as per his point was - which is a diff issue altogether) is inferring.
Otherwise, what is it inferring? Would you like to explain?

Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said "when my companions are mentioned then hold your tongues" or something to that effect, so if that's being prickly then so be it
Seven explained it, i don't go any deeper than that to please my own understanding, it's happy enough reading things as it is *Roll Eyes*
