For more than fourteen centuries, Islam has grown and spread from the seventh-century Arabia of the Prophet Muhammad to a world religion whose followers may be found across the globe. It spawned and informed Islamic empires and states as well as a great world civilization that stretched from North Africa to Southeast Asia. In the process, a great monotheistic tradition, sharing common roots with Judaism and Christianity, has guided and transformed the lives of millions of believers down through the ages. Characterized by an uncompromising belief in the one, true God – His revelation and Prophet – Islam developed a spiritual path whose law, ethics, theology, and mysticism have made it one of the fastest growing religions both in the past and today. Media images of Islam have often obscured the fact that Muslims, Jews and Christians share much in common. They are indeed all children of Abraham. Like Jews and Christians, Muslims worship the God of Abraham and Moses, believe in God’s revelation and prophets and place a strong emphasis on moral responsibility and accountability. The vast majority of Muslims, like most members of other religious traditions, are pious, hardworking women and men, family and community oriented, who wish to live in peace and harmony rather than in warfare.

For Muslims throughout the centuries, the message of the Qur'an (the Muslim holy book) and the example of the Prophet Muhammad have constituted the formative and enduring foundation of faith and belief. They have served as the basic sources of Islamic law and the reference points for daily life. Muslims today, as in the past, continue to affirm that the Qur'an is the literal word of God, the Creator’s immutable guidance for an otherwise transient world. This significance of this transhistorical belief is rooted in the conviction that the Qur'an and the Prophet provide eternal principles and norms upon which Muslims life, both individual and collective, is to be patterned. The challenge for each generation of believers has been the continued formulation, appropriation, and implementation of Islam in history. Islamic history and civilization provide the record of that struggle to interpret and to follow its path.

Islam in the last decade of the twentieth century had ceased to be solely of interest to those who are concerned with “foreign” religions or cultures. As we are slowly realizing, Islam is truly a world religion, increasingly visible in Europe and the United States as well as Asia Africa, and the Middle East. Muslims are very much part of the mosaic of Western societies, no longer foreign visitors but fellow citizens and colleagues. Thus, to understand the world in which we live, requires a knowledge of Islam as a prerequisite for an appreciation of our theologically interconnected and historically intertwined Judeo-Christian-Islamic heritage.

Qur'an and Hadith

The Qur'an is the Holy book of Muslims, believed by them to be the direct revelation of God (Allah) to Muhammad (peace be upon him). Muslims also recognize as other sources of authority the hadith--stories related by others about the Prophet's words and deeds--and the Bible and the Torah.

Prohibitions on Terrorism, and Exhortations to Living with Mercy, Compassion and Patience in the Qur'an

Whosoever kills an innocent human being, it shall be as if he has killed all mankind, and whosoever saves the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. (5:32)

Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord, and in the race for a garden wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the righteous- (the righteous are) those who spend whether in prosperity or adversity, who restrain anger and who pardon all people. For God loves those who do good. (3:133 –134)

Invite all to the way of your God with wisdom and beautiful preaching. And argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious. For your God knows best who have strayed from his path and who receive guidance. And if you do respond to an attack, respond no worse than they did. But if you show patience, that is indeed the best course. Be patient- for your patience is from God . . . Indeed, God is with those who restrain themselves and those who do good. (16:125-128)

O You who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to God, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be against rich or poor, for God can best protect both. Follow not the cravings of your hearts, lest you swerve, and if you distort justice or decline to do justice, verily God is well acquainted with all that you do. (4:135)

To those who persevere in doing good is a reward more than in measure. No darkness nor shame shall cover their faces. They are companions of the garden where they will live forever. But those who have earned evil will have a reward like evil. Humiliation will cover their faces. They will have no defender from God. (10:26-27)

The recompense for an injury is an injury equal thereto (in degree), but if a person forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is due from God, for God does not love those who do wrong. But indeed if any do help and defend themselves after a wrong done to them, against such there is no cause of blame. The blame is only against those who oppress men with wrongdoing and insolently transgress beyond bounds through the land, defying right and justice, for such there will be a penalty grievous. (42:40-43)

Relations between Communities of Faith in the Qur'an

(NOTE: the term “People of the Book” is used in the Qur'an to refer to Jews and Christians, among others who have received scriptures which contain divine guidance.)

Not your desires, nor those of the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) can prevail- whoever works evil will be requited accordingly, nor will he find, besides God, any protector or helper. And if any do deeds of righteousness, be they male or female, they will enter heaven, and not the least injustice will be done to them.
Who can be better in religion than one who submits his whole self to God, does good, and follows the way of Abraham the true in faith? For God did take Abraham as a friend. And to God belong all things in the heavens and the earth. And it is he that encompasses all things. (4:122-126)

It was we who revealed the Law of Moses, and therein was guidance and light. By its standard have been judged the Jews, the Prophets who bowed to God’s will, the Rabbis, and the doctors of law. And they were witnesses thereto…We ordained for them ‘life for life, eye for eye, nose for nose, tooth for tooth, and wounds equal for equal.’ But if anyone remits the retaliation by way of charity it is an act of atonement for himself. And if any fail to judge by the light of what God hath revealed, they are wrongdoers.
And in their footsteps we sent Jesus, the son of Mary, confirming the law that had come before him. We sent him the Gospel, therein was guidance and light and confirmation of the law- a guidance and an admonition to those who fear God. Let the people of the Gospel judge by what God has revealed therein. If any fail to judge by the light of what God has revealed, they are of those who rebel.
To thee we sent the scripture in truth confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety. So judge between them by what God has revealed. And follow not their vain desires, if they diverge from the truth that has come to thee.
To each among you we have prescribed a law, an open way. If God had so willed, he would have made you a single people. But his plan is to test you in what he has given you. So strive as in a race of all virtues. The goal of each of you is to God. It is he that will show you the truth in matters that you dispute. (5:44-48)

To each [religious community] we have given a direction which it follows, so compete [all together] in [the performance of] good deeds. Whosesoever you may be, God shall certainly gather you all [for Divine Judgment]. God certainly has power over all things. (2:148)

Let there be no compulsion (or coercion) in the religion (Islam). The right direction is distinctly clear from error. (2:256)

Say: We believe in God, and in what has been revealed to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes, and in [the books] given to Moses, Jesus and the prophets from their Lord: We make no distinction between one and another among them, and to God de we submit in Islam. (3:84)

Prohibition on Suicide in the Qur'an

O you who believe! Do not eat up your wealth in vanities among yourselves. But let there be among yourselves trade conducted in mutual good will. Nor kill or destroy yourselves, for God has been most merciful to you. If any do that in rancor and injustice, soon shall we cast them into the fire, and that is easy for God. If you but avoid the most heinous of the things which are forbidden to do, we shall expel out of you all the evil in you and admit you to a gate of great honor. (4:29-31)

Exhortations to Living with Mercy, Compassion and Patience in the Hadith

The Prophet Muhammad said: Neither cause harm nor injure one another. (p.106)

"A man said to the Prophet, 'Counsel me.' He said: 'Do not become angry.’ The man repeated the question several times, and the Prophet said each time 'Do not become angry.’” (p.62)

"Each person's every joint must perform charity every day the sun comes up. To act justly between two people is charity; to help a man with his mount is charity; lifting him onto it or hoisting up his belongings onto it is charity; a good word is charity; every step you take to prayers is charity; and removing a harmful thing from the road is charity." (p. 88)

"Let him who believes in God and the Last Day either speak good or keep silent, and let him who believes in God and the Last Day be generous to his neighbor, and let him who believes in God and the last day be generous to his guest." (p. 60)

Mujahid reported that 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr had one of his goats slaughtered for him, and then said to his servant boy, "Did you give a share of the goat meat to our neighbour, the Jewish man? I once heard the Prophet, upon him be peace, say, "Jibril, upon whom be peace, continued telling me (how important it is to do good toward one's) neighbours until I thought he was going to tell me that they have a share in one's inheritance as well." [This hadith was related by Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi and Tahawi]

Prohibitions on Suicide in the Hadith

The Prophet said, " Whoever commits suicide with piece of iron will be punished with the same piece of iron in the Hell Fire." Jundab narrated that the Prophet said, "A man was inflicted with wounds and he committed suicide, and so God said: My slave has caused death on himself hurriedly, so I forbid Paradise for him." (002.023.445)

Amongst the companions of the Prophet there was a man who could not help pursuing any single pagan to strike him with his sword. [After a battle] somebody said, "None has benefited the Muslims today more than so-and-so." On that God's Apostle said, "He is from the people of the Hell-Fire certainly." A man amongst the people (i.e. Muslims) said, "I will accompany him (to know that fact)." So he went along with him, and whenever he stopped, the man stopped with him, and whenever he hastened, the man hastened with him. The (brave) man then got wounded severely, and seeking to die at once, he planted his sword into the ground and put its point against his chest in between his breasts, and then threw himself on it and committed suicide.
On that the person (who was accompanying the deceased all the time) came to God's Apostle and said, "I testify that you are the Apostle of God." The Prophet said, "What makes you say so?" He said "It is concerning the man whom you have already mentioned as one of the dwellers of the Hell-Fire. The people were surprised by your statement, and I said to them, "I will try to find out the truth about him for you." So I went out after him, and he was then inflicted with a severe wound. Because of that, he hurried to bring death upon himself by planting the handle of his sword into the ground and directing its tip towards his chest between his breasts, and then he threw himself over it and committed suicide."

God’s Apostle then said, "A man may do what seem to the people as the deeds of the dwellers of Paradise, but he is of the dwellers of the Hell-Fire. And another may do what seem to the people as the deeds of the dwellers of the Hell-Fire, but he is of the dwellers of Paradise." (005-059-514)

The Excellence of As-Salat (The Prayer)
Allah, the Exalted, says:

"Verily, As-Salat (the prayer) prevents from Al-Fahsha' (i.e., great sins of every kind, unlawful sexual intercourse) and Al-Munkar (i.e., disbelief, polytheism, and every kind of evil, wicked deed).'' (29:45)

1042. Abu Hurairahu (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying, "Say, if there were a river at the door of one of you in which he takes a bath five times a day, would any soiling remain on him?'' They replied, "No soiling would left on him.'' He (PBUH) said, '' That is the five (obligatory) Salat (prayers). Allah obliterates all sins as a result of performing them.''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary: This Hadith tells us about the merit and benefits of the performance of the prescribed five daily Salat, performing them will wash off one's sins, but this is true of only such Salat which is performed in accordance with Sunnah, i.e., punctually in exactly the manner showed by the Prophet (PBUH), and not of that which is offered at will in one's own way.

1043. Jabiru (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "The similitude of the five (obligatory) Salat is like a river running at the door of one of you in which he takes a bath five times a day.''
[Muslim].

1044. Ibn Mas`ud (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: A man kissed a woman. So he came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) and informed him about it. Then Allah revealed this Ayah: "And perform the Salat, between the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night. Verily, the good deeds efface the evil deeds (i.e., minor sins).'' (11:114) The man asked the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) whether this applies to him only. The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "It applies to all of my Ummah.''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Commentary: "Between the ends of the day'' means Fajr and Maghrib prayers. Some people think it refers to `Isha' prayer while some think it means the Maghrib and `Isha' prayers. "In some hours of the night'' means the Tahajjud prayers. This Ayah of the Qur'an has been quoted here to stress that Salat is an act of great virtue and an expiation of sins, but only for minor sins because the major sins will not be pardoned without sincere repentance.

1045. Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "The five (daily) Salat (prayers) and the Friday (prayer) to the Friday (prayer) expiate whatever (minor sins) may be committed in between, so long as major sins are avoided.''
[Muslim].

Commentary: This Hadith elucidates that the minor sins committed during the interval of the five prescribed Salat and in the period intervening between one Jumu`ah and the other are pardoned with the performance of the five-time prescribed Salat and the Jumu`ah prayer, provided one does not commit major sins which are not forgiven without repentance. Sins like Shirk (associating someone with Allah in worship), disobedience of parents, false oath, false evidence, encroachment on an orphan's property, calumny against chaste women, etc., fall in the category of major sins and will not be forgiven by means of Salat only.

1046. `Uthman bin `Affan (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying, "When the time for a prescribed Salat is due and a Muslim performs its Wudu' and its acts of bowing and prostration properly, this Salat will be an expiation for his past sins, so long as he does not commit major sins, and this applies for ever.''
[Muslim].

Commentary: This Hadith stresses the importance of performing Salat with all its essential prerequisites, i.e., Wudu' and concentration of mind. Such a Salat will expiate the sins.

The Muslim Creed
(IslamWeb) By: Dr. Suhaib Hasan

Allah (God) is One and Has no partners. Nothing is similar to Him and
nothing can surpass Him in greatness. No one and nothing is worthy of
being worshipped except Him. He is The First, with no beginning, and
The Eternal with no ending. Nothing happens except with His will. The
imagination cannot perceive His real essence. He is Alive and death
will never overtake Him. He is the Creator of the entire universe and
is in no need of His creation.

Allah has always existed with all His attributes. His attributes did
not increase or decrease after he brought His creatures into
existence. He has power over everything and everything is in complete
need of Him. The Qur'an says: "There is nothing like unto Him. And He
is the All-Hearer, All-Seer." (42:11)

Man's abilities are limited, but Allah's abilities are not. Nothing
can escape Him.

Allah the Almighty created everything consciously. Nothing was hidden
from Him before He brought His creatures into existence. He knew what
His creatures would do in their lives before He created them. Allah
Almighty commands His people to obey Him and forbids them from
disobeying. Everything in this universe is bound to His will. What He
wills occurs , likewise, what He does not will can never happen.
Allah Almighty guides whoever he wishes. He protects everyone out of
His kindness.

All of creation is under His decree. No one can change His pre-
ordained decisions, nor can His orders be delayed. We have complete
faith in Him. We believe that everything happens due to Him.

Muhammad (peace be upon him)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the most exalted creature. A Prophet
to all humanity. He is the last of the Prophets, and the most beloved
to the Creator of the universe.

The Glorious Qur'an

It is the word of Allah revealed to the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH). It
is not a created thing and It does not resemble the words of human
beings.

Whoever does not concede the Book (Qur'an) and the Sunnah (Prophet's
sayings, actions and approvals) is no longer a Muslim.

Attempting to imagine Allah, in any form, is forbidden. A true Muslim
believes in all the attributes of Allah based on the text of the
Qur'an and the authentic narrations of the Sunnah. Allah is Unique;
unlike anything else He is not bound by limits. None of His
Attributes resemble those of His creatures. When Imam Malik bin Anas
was questioned about the following verse: "The Beneficent (Allah)
rose over the (Mighty) Throne." (20:5) He replied: "The act of rising
over the Throne is well-known, but 'how' is unknown and to question
about it is an innovation." A Muslim should adopt this attitude
regarding all the attributes of Allah.

Mi'raj (Ascention)

The Mi'raj (the Prophet's night journey to heaven) is true. Allah
Almighty took His Prophet (PBUH) on a magnificent journey into the
heavens while he was awake. His ascension took place in his human
form and Allah ascended him as high as he willed for him to ascend.

The River of Kauthar (in Paradise)

The river of Kauthar is true. Allah Almighty will let the Ummah
(Muslim nation) quench its thirst from this exalted river.

The Intercession

The intercession (Shafa'a) of the Prophet (PBUH) for this Ummah is
true, according to a number of hadiths.

The Covenant

The pledge that Allah took from Adam (PBUH) and his descendants is
true. Allah says, "And (remember) when thy Lord brought forth from
the Children of Adam, from their loins, their seed, and made them
testify of themselves, (saying): Am I not your Lord? They said: Yea,
verily. We testify. (That was) lest ye should say at the Day of
Resurrection: Lo! of this we were unaware. Or lest ye should say: (It
is) only (that) our fathers ascribed partners to Allah of old and we
were (their) seed after them. Wilt Thou destroy us on account of that
which those who follow falsehood did?" (Holy Qur'an, 7:172,173)

Qadar (Divine Decree)

Allah Almighty knew who would enter Paradise or Hell before they were
created. He knows all the actions that the people will undertake.
Allah has withdrawn the knowledge of Qadar from His creatures and
forbade them from arguing about it. He says:
"He cannot be questioned as to what He does, while they will be
questioned." (Holy Qur'an, 21:23)

We believe in the pen and the tablets and whatever is associated with
the writing of Qadar. What Allah has decreed must happen, even though
the creatures may try their best to prevent it. Similarly, if Allah
has decreed for something not to happen, it will never happen, though
all creatures may try their utmost to do it. Allah has decreed
whatever is going to happen until the Day of Judgement. Allah's
decree will never fail. No one can change, overrule, increase or
decrease whatever is decreed by Him. Belief in these facts indicates
a firm belief, recognition of truth and sound awareness of the
Oneness of Allah.

Allah says: "He has created everything, and has measured it exactly
according to its due measurements." (Holy Qur'an, 25:2)

The Throne and Footstool

The Divine Throne ('Arsh) and Footstool (Kursi) are true. Allah
Almighty is in no need of the Throne or anything other than it. Allah
Almighty is above everything. He dominates all and nothing can
surpass Him.

The Books of Allah

We believe in all the books that were revealed to Allah's Prophets
and Messengers and bear witness that all of them spoke the truth.

Prophets and Messengers

We believe in all the Prophets and Messengers of Allah. We do not
differentiate among them.

General Beliefs

We do not approve of rebellions against our Imams (leaders) and
rulers, even though they may act unjustly. We do not pray against
them, nor do we refuse to obey them. We hold that obedience to them
is part of obedience to Allah, as long as they do not command us to
commit sins. We pray to Allah that He may guide and forgive them. We
follow the Sunnah [the way of the Prophet (PBUH)] and keep away from
dissension, disagreement and division.

We love the people of justice and trust and despise those of tyranny
and betrayal.
We say, "Allah knows best" whenever we are in doubt.

We believe in the angels who are commissioned to record whatever we
utter or do. We believe in the angel of death who is commissioned to
take away the souls of everyone. We believe in the punishment of the
grave concerning those who deserve it. We believe that two angels
known as Munkar and Nakir question everyone in their graves about the
Creator, the religion and the Prophet (PBUH). The grave is either a
garden from the gardens of Paradise, or a ditch from the ditches of
Hell.

We believe in the resurrection and the requital of deeds, the
presentation of deeds (to Allah), the account (of our deeds), the
reading of everyone's record, the reward, the punishment, the bridge
(over the Hell-fire), and the scale.

Both the Paradise and Hell are created. They will never perish or
come to an end. Allah the Almighty will admit whom He wills into
Paradise, out of His Grace, or into the Hell-fire out of His Justice.

People's actions are created by Allah, but earned by themselves (i.e.
The deeds have been created, but the individual decides between right
and wrong). Allah Almighty has only asked people to do what they can
manage. They themselves are not able to do anything except what He
has enabled them to do.

Everything happens by the Will of Allah, His Knowledge, His Decree
and His Pre-destination. Allah is never unjust. Allah says, "He
cannot be questioned as to what He does, but they will be
questioned." (Holy Qur'an, 21:23)

He owns everything. No one is needless of Him, even for one blink of
an eye. Allah Almighty becomes angry and pleased, but His anger and
pleasure are not like that of His creatures.

We believe in the signs preceding the Hour, such as the advent of the
Dajjal (anti-Christ), the descent of Jesus Son of Mary from Heaven,
the rising of the sun from the west and the appearance of the
subterranean beast from its place.

We do not believe in soothsayers, sorcerers or anyone claiming
anything contrary to the Qur'an and Sunnah and the consensus of the
scholars of the Ummah (Muslim Nation).

In the heavens and earth, the religion of Allah is one, i.e. Islam.
Allah says: "Verily, the religion with Allah is Islam." (Holy Qur'an,
2:19)

We pray to Allah Almighty to guide us firmly on the path, to let us
die on it, to protect us from the opposing and contradicting views,
and from disparaging factions.
