damn good, as in something that's very useful and you happen to use frequently.
what's back track 2? a restoration app?

xmms media player
Firefox is usually installed by default but I agree gmail notifier is a defo necessity for me anyway :p
If by damn good you mean "killer app" there's a few but many are pre-installed...konqueror is imho one of the killer apps for linux. It comes with KDE.
YaKuake is another killer app for me...can't really explain how awesome it is, but if like me, you use the command line/console/terminal/shell/whatever you want to call it, a lot, then you'll love yakuake.
Hmm...can't really think of any more. I'll see if I remember any

xmms media player
yuck! why not switch to beepmedia player? it's xmms but with gtk2 instead of that ugly gtk1 (with motif theme). and it's 100% compatible with xmms and winamp themes...

Because XMMS (with gtk1) is significantly smaller, lighter and therefore faster. Plus I find its more configurable...although that was using an old version of bmp.
Besides, the player is in skinned mode about 99% of the time, I very rarely bring up a gtk window so it doesn't really matter  (and I've actually had people comment on how good "linux's media player" looks :p obviously talking about the sick skins :D)
BTW talking about motif...can you actually get themes for gtk1, or can I change the gtk1 theme? If I could get a nice gtk1 theme I'd be even happier :D

there's actually ONE gtk theme I know of, but unfortunately I lost the name and link. but the theme was a heck of a lot nicer than motif. it looked like mac's theme (not brushed metal, nor the latest one, but previous to that). it looked very good.
after i lost the link and couldn't skin it, that's when i looked for alternatives and found BMP. since then, i stopped looking for it.

this my first time running xgl and so far so good...but i think it's pretty useless. my bro really likes it though...he says this is better than vista (which is true). i wish I had a better pc then maybe i'd actually be able to enjoy xgl.... damn 4 year old laptop =(

lol akhi I know exactly what you mean! I just spent the last or something fiddling about creating a ksplash theme for ubuntuME :p
Howcome you're using Xgl? As far as I know, xgl is a poorly put together hack and you should try to use xorg's built in Aiglx feature...
And br I have a 3 year old computer and aiglx etc works perfect...age doesn't really matter...actually, my processor is quite good but apart from that, its old.
Some of it is useless, even most, but some of it is incredibly useful. Like the scale plugin (like Mac's Exposé) the ability to make windows transparent easily, the cube (makes multi desktop usage much easier imho) and the zoom tool. I haven't been able to get beryl working with sidux and I think the zoom tool, the cube effect, and scale are the things I've missed most.
As for the rest, I don't care if they're useless :D They're cool :D :D

yeah i too hate xgl, but since SuSE hired their own dudes (or should i say dude) to make XGL and Compiz, it's only natural that they'd use their product in SuSE.
my favorite set up is how PCLinuxOS has it, with AiGLX and Beryl. Compiz sucks, and so does XGL.
I'll probably mess around with SuSE once i'm done with my studies...I got 3 more chapters to nail down and submit my final by tomorrow. Once I get that out of the way, i should have a good 3 day vacation away from schoolwork, insha'allah. I'd like to remove xgl and compiz, and replace it with AiGLX and Beryl. But I wonder how difficult it would be. If it's too risky, I probably won't go through with it and just leave it alone. My main aim was to get networking to work under linux and that's been done. the current main goal is to really set up the system so I can continue using Linux when doing research, writing papers, system tweaks, etc. The eye candy can come later....

Yup [K]ubuntu has AIGLX built in as well. I agree compiz is pretty lame compared to beryl...at least I feel so. Others don't apparently...the two teams are merging at the moment so dunno what t he result will be. Hopefully a better overall.
Its all about will power :p I need to make myself work more and mess around with linux less! Its just so tempting :nervous: :p
If suse doesn't have aiglx with xorg, I imagine it would be a case of installing the module right? Worst case scenario, might mean you have to recompile xorg with aiglx? That sounds pretty bad...
Yeah for now productivity comes first. I'm like that...when I need to do school stuff its about stability, otherwise, living on the bleeding edge ;) (actually, I'm using sidux which is bleeding edge, but its surprisingly stable...)

I discovered Nvu and gFTP in the past week.

NVu's cool, but i had major issues with it. You tried KOmPoZeR (however they spell it)? It's supposed to be a more updated version of NVu, and NVu is stopped development. Mozilla is picking up work for Mozilla Composer again (NVU is based on Mozilla composer which had stopped development a while back, but now back in business).

actually they don't compare at all. NVU is a WYSIWYG application, Aptana is a IDE that sticks to coding only. You can however compare Aptana to Screem, BlueFish, Eclipse (which is what it seems to be based on), Quanta+ etc...
I used Screem and while it crashed a few times in the past, recently it's been a cool app. I love the autocomplete, class/id module features...

Well, coding pwns wysiwyg anyway, so use aptana :p

it does, but i'm finding myself doing less and less mistakes when coding by hand :( and these headaches are making me want to pull out some hair sometimes...
and thats when i think "damn, i coulda done this in 2 minutes with frontpage" (how pathetic!)

I dunno if I've ever been in a situation where I could've done something quicker (and/or better) in frontpage :)

Nvu is a bit of a CPU hog when it comes to editing text heavy pages. Fortunately I can do that in OpenOffice Writer :)

i been in plenty, but that's probably because I started "seriously" developing with frontpage. I learned HTML with SimpleText (mac's equivalent of Notepad). When I got to windows, I got into using free geocities crap, then to Frontpage. Stayed with that for a good 3 or 4 years..hence why I got kinda comfortable with it. I only went using DreamWeaver after a friend of mine got into it and it made things difficult when I'd open something made in dreamweaver and he opening something I did in frontpage.

You heard of Amaya? it's a pretty light weight editor, much like NVU but better IMHO. and it's from w3.org so it's from the peeps who make the standards
