Just to remind those who already know or inform those that didn't.

Pig Skin shoes. How to tell!

The hair follicles on pig skin tend to be grouped in pinhole size formations of 3, thus leaving a tell tale pattern. Sometimes this is difficult to see particularly with suede effect surfaces.

Info on Clarks, Barratts (Stylo) and Hush Puppies shoes here.

There are opinions on this, many support the opinion that wearing shoes made from pig is permissable and this is based on the hadith:

Ibn `Abbs relates that Allahs Messenger (peace be upon him) said: If the hide of an animal is tanned, it becomes pure.
This is an authentic hadth related in Sahh Muslim and other books.

that hadith does not make it permissible, one has to assume that it's talking about Swine...

and filth such as swine is certainly not permissible, secondly which Muslim would want to wear a Pig skinned shoe? :eek3:

we shouldn't go near it let alone wear it...

Another one to keep in my mind is pastry brushes.

That mostly has pig hair but sometimes they have nylon ones. These are labelled nylon and you can tell.

Be careful when buying and using this . . .

As I said, there are some who claim that tanning makes it permissable, based on that hadith, for example the Zhir school of thought (whoever they are!).

But according to the link:

"The strongest of all these opinions and Allah knows best is that tanning only purifies the hides of the carcasses of animals that we would be allowed to eat had they been properly slaughtered."

Now where can you buy halal shoes?

I wonder if there are any Muslims playing American "Football."

Don't they use a "pigskin?"

The pig was among the first animals to be domesticated, as early as 7000 BC. Hernando DeSoto, an explorer, brought the first pigs to America in 1539. Today, pigs are raised across the U.S. and in almost every other country in the world.

Producers raise pigs today that weigh more, grow more efficiently, and yield more lean meat than ever before. Bacon, pork sausage, pork chops, and ham all come from pigs, but there are about 500 different by-products of pigs as well. Some examples of by-products are fertilizers, glass, china, floor wax, chalk, crayons, and medicine.

Marshmallows are still a big issue for observant Jews and Muslims. Marshmallows and marshmallow cream containing pork are found in a great many products, including: ice cream, frozen desserts, fondant and nougat candies, fudge, cake frosting, pies, cookies, Smores, and some breakfast cereals, like Lucky Charms.

After meat, drugs and medicines are the major products that come from beef and pork. Hogs alone provide 40 important drugs. Look around your house: soap, paint, detergent, cosmetics, wallpaper, glass and plastics -- all are made from animals. We even use animal by-products in our cars: in tires, seat coverings, antifreeze and oil.

Plastic comb: Several fatty acids from animals are key ingredients in plastic. Think of all the things that are made of plastic!
