My download speed was 254kbs and upload was 243 kbs. I warn anyone never get Tiscali broadband.

It's crap, I spent five minutes today just trying to connect to the server. These cheapskates throttle your bandwidth in peak times and the only times you will get anything even close to 2MB speeds is after 11PM.

Several times yesterday I noticed my downloads were as slow as a 56kbs dialup modem.

Never get Tiscali. They're CRAP.

I was looking forward to getting BE Broadband, but they don't provide their service in my city and I live in a major city!

Anyone got any recommendations for a broadband service which is below £20 and has unlimited usage?

Do you require a cable inserted into your house or is it done over the telephone wire?

It should open the page...click on the little yellow/gold prymaid (London) and it should zoom in and start the test. Just wait for it to finish, it'll come up with your results, and a list of code. Just click copy next to "forum" and press paste here.

Yep...my friend's got tiscali and its awful. He just logs off randomly when talking on MSN cos the connection breaks.

I strongly recommend Virgin Media (NTL). If you live in a cable area that is. Few years ago NTL used to be awful but alhamdulillah their service has improved massively. Its very reliable (masha'Allah :p) and reasonably fast (see my original post)

Standard price (what we pay) is £18.00 but I think you get a few months cheaper when you join.

If you don't live in a cable area...virgin is probably just as good/bad as any other ADSL provider.

Virgin has installed 20MB infrastructure in my area recently, so their best package customers get 20MB broadband (for no extra cost) while us on the lowest package get no improvement :( Good marketing I guess...although they'd be more popular if they gave improvements universally.

Summary: Get Virgin/NTL cable broadband

EDIT: Just read the other posts...abdullah, its cable. But trust me...its worth it ;) urban rose lol, its cable :p :)

10mbps sounds about right...you got that with tiscali?

The 2nd image you posted means you have 0.8mbps which is not good assuming your supposed to be getting tiscali 2MB? If so, you're getting less than half of what you're paying for...

Ooh wait...do you have Virgin Media NTL, or the other one (you know when virgin merged with ntl and the other ISP...)

And no, cable means how the system actually works...if its ADSL, something goes from your computer to your phone socket. If you have cable, its a completely seperate thing to your phone line, and goes out of your house through the wall...

My advice: Switch ISPs.

idoubt theymerged sis. most likely they went into partnership/alliance, but never will merge. if yahoo was to merge with BT,then alot of the other broadband providers would lose out on using yahoo as their portal. see BT would have a upperhand, yet yahoo would be the one losing business.

besides...if yahoo did merge with anyone, it would be all over slashdot, news.com, techrepublic, and the other usual sites. look what happened last week, someone said a few words along the lines of "microsoft and yahoo..." and everyone thought microsoft was gonna buy yahoo.... all the sites was raving about it till the officials came and squashed it.

Is it for anything official, or just personal? If the latter, why not just use a dynamic dns service like dyndns (http://www.dyndns.com/) which is free and should suite your needs perfect. Saves you £4

Plus even if it is for something more official or whatever, you can always redirect (or mask or cloak or something, can't remember what its called) a bought domain to your dynamic one without anyone ever being the wiser.

Maybe its just me being bent on saving poxy £4 a month :p

Yeah it used to be awful before...I dunno how but they got their act together relatively recently and its really good now. I dunno what impact the Virgin merger has had on that...not that much I imagine...although in the long term it may be good.

I've really started to dislike Sky recently...they're the Microsoft of Satellite TV/broadband :torture:

Its "fast" as in fast enough. Its not amazingly fast like some other peoples. But you're getting what you're paying for which is important, and assuming you're on NTL cable broadband, its reliable as well which is possibly as/more important

Nami's trick is to phone up and say you want to switch because you found another ISP with a better deal (even if you have no intention of doing so...although you should probably make that intention so its not lying :)) and then wait a few seconds for the person on the other end of the line to offer you a better deal :D

average price is about 20 USD for anywhere between 786kbps/3xxKbps to 1.5Mbps/786kbps. Normally, cable is about 30 USD a month and offers about 10-15Mbps and they usually pack in phone and t.v service with that for another 30 bucks each (it's called triple play package).

Verizon entered recently with its FiOS service which is all fiber, and start for 40 bucks a month, you get 25Mbps (or i think 30Mbps). FiOS is really fast, and I think Mace (a member here) had/has that and he seemed to give it a very high approval (as did EVERYONE else).

I read a report on News.com that when the gov't auctions off the analog tv spectrum, they want to give it to some mobile/cell operator so they could offer mobile broadband. basically the gov't wants prices for broadband to come down even further so that broadband penetration skyrockets. and ofcourse, next year hopefully sprint launches its WiMaX initiative in 17 states or so, so that definitely is something to watch as it could drive local broadband providers to bring down their prices even further.

Basically we hope to have broadband prices down to 10 dollars or less a month soon. that's the only way broadband usage can get high and we'd be able to compete better with south korea.

actually just a little while ago, BT had offered speeds faster than what our DSL providers could churn out. you guys were the first (among us) to get speeds higher than 786Kbps, and then 1.5Mbps. It was only due to the cable providers that our DSL speeds got faster because of competition. people started switching from dsl to cable like crazy because DSL used to cost about 40 to 45 bucks a month, where as cable had cost 49 bucks a month but with speeds of 3 to 6Mbps. Then prices for DSL went down to 30 bucks and upped the speed to 1.5, then 3.0Mbps, and cable followed suit dropping prices to 30 but also upping the speed.

but u know, UK will get much faster thanks to BBC. they taking some initiatives about delivering more content with better quality (videos), so that means bandwidth requirements will rise, and that in turn will force telco's to up their speeds.

These are the cheapest rates I could find all with unlimited bandwidth:

1MB - tiscali - £12.24
2MB - AOL - £13.74
4MB - Virgin media - £21.88
8MB - eclipse internet - £13.74
16MB - sky - £25.00
20MB - Virgin media - £32.37
24MB - be - £24.00

but they are all "rubbish" except virgin media because the rest seem to use bt's exchange centres which mess things up even if it says 24MB, you will only get what the exchange centre can send you depending on how far you are from it.

this is where virgin media is the best in the uk because when they say 20MB, you "most of the time" get 20MB.

and apparently their lines can handle 50MB (soon to be made available) and theoretically they can go upto 60MB...

Cable is generally better than ADSL...everyone should just abondon adsl and switch to cable, or even better, FTTP like Fios ;)

And I really don't see BBC's services over the net as making that much difference...real advanced, complete fibre infrastructure is very expensive and if initiated by private companies themselves isn't very appealing/may not be profitable. In the continent the initiative was taken by governments, and thats what needs to be done :torture:

if you don't have the demand, then things will remain the same. you need to demand in order for someone to make the initiative to fill that gap. now BBC is probably the biggest content provider in UK (i could be wrong, i don't live there afterall and never been there). if you look carefully, you see the content owners like BBC are the ones who hold the bargaining power. regardless of how expensive the infastructure may be, the technology has advanced enough to provide cheaper-than-before technology. remember, fiber isn't the only option, and besides that you can still churn out good speeds over copper provided the centers relaying the connection gets improved.

and for the record, no gov't here made the initiative to set up fiber connections. it was private companies who thought during the 80's (maybe 70's too?) the demand for fiber would rise at some point, so they started digging up streets and laying the fiber. all this time, that fiber was just there doing NOTHING, hence why it's called "dark fiber". lately however, companies started buying these dark fiber, mainly google, and started putting it to use. there's a rumor going around that google is setting up these shipping containers that act as small data centers connecting points in the fiber grid. some people are saying google may offer free net access or something, or they could resell that for cheap so consumers can get cheaper fiber, which ultimately helps their business (in ADs, youTube, etc).

Which company did that and how did they afford/fund it and make profit from it? I mean obviously they're selling it now but for 10/20 years or whatever they would be making nothing and not recovering their expenses, which would have been massive.

If only everyone was that forward thinking...although obvious problem if everyone tries to be is most people will have wrong predictions and will end up bankrupt...

Haha well there you go...thats exactly why no one over here is gonna take the initiative...unless the govt. does it. Because the govt. can afford to "lose" money in the short term and make it back in the long term cos they'll still be around in so many years. i don't think it would be wise to go dig up streets and lay down fiber. it's ALOT wiser to use wireless broadband. if gov't's want to set up better speeds, let em free up the analog spectrum and force people to buy HDTVs. this solves two things: 1) it frees up the analog tv spectrum, and 2) HDTV adoption rises, so retailers profit/economy profits.

when the spectrum is free, let them run mobile broadband on that. you could auction off the spectrum and let the ISP's fight over it. that way, competition rises and consumers win.

then again, if BPL was accepted more widely, then u wouldn't have any of this problem since you'd get decent speeds out of your outlet :coolbro:

No I was lined up to do the work as there designer they said went 'missing' I was working on a logo for them and then I was offline for ages. I'm going to do more work with them insha Allah in the future and they asked me to work with them on some applications. So that sounds fun :D

yeah that would be good bro. we need more designers for that project  also, we gonna change the name of the project to reflect something more islamically, so we'd definitely like it if u work with us.

And lool just click some links and you'll see ;) the bro's put his pics up publicly (not on the forum) so I'm guessing he doesn't mind :p

EDIT: Oh right you mean the 77pixels studio thing...and his CV. Just read it...I see what you're talking about re: UbuntuME. Cool looking CV...I guess it suits design etc but I heard most employs hate flashy templates and colours in CVs? :(

Have you been in touch with Orange about this ?

Whether they deliberately slow things down in the evenings and weekends ?

Haha no I meant...I was just thinking "cool CV...I might do that" but then remembered some careers person telling me person managers/human resources or whatever they're called, people hate seeing flashy colourful CVs so I decided against it, then posted some of that thought process here which provoked a response from you which obliged me to respond to your reply...

u know, if ur gonna pay that much, u might aswell pay 5 dollars LESS and get cable.... with that u'd get atleast double that speed, or at most, 3 to 5 times more speed.
the only other cable internet company around here is Comcast!
u gotta pay $19 for the first 6 months, and then it becomes $42. but the speed is blazing 6 mbps.
so, the one we have now is the best deal around here.
