I have over 8 years experience with Photoshop and have no problem teaching. I have even done webcam feeds of lessons whilst talking over skype.
Just ask and I'll help you out. Also checkout http://www.pixel2life.com/

I want to erase the background or replace its colour, what do you think you would be the best way of doing it ?

lol nice to see your starting off with the easy stuff
You would be best off getting a plugin for masking out certain colours, otherwise it will take you ages.

I did this (obviously very quickly) using the zoom and the magic wand tool, then held down ctrl and kept selecting the blue areas. After that I deleted it.
It's is by no means perfect and I personally think it looks crudely done, but you can always experiment and zoom in further.

You could use other settings such as select> modify> expand (1px) to cover some bits that show blue on the edges, but you will lose some detail on the branches etc

use the pen tool (http://www.arraich.com/ref/aatool_pen6.htm)
and better do your changes and background isolation in a mask (http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/photoshoptutorialsselect/Working_with_Masks_and_Making_Selections_in_Photos hop.htm)

Masks are better you are correct but the pen tool for a beginner would be hard. It can take along time to perfect the pen. Worth it mind, but a long time none the less.
