View Full Version : First aid
Something that I highly recomend for all parents, and I'm not talking about those quick and easy courses like St John's Ambulance basic first aid; I am talking serious, advanced first aid because at some point you are going to need it. We all assume that an ambulance is only a phone call away but what happens in a natural disaster or for some reason an ambulance isn't readily available?
The ambulance may only be 5 minutes away but a child can bleed to death in that time or asphyxiate
:smack: now i remember i have to take basic first aid soon since it's kinda ancessecity for my job. i work security. looks bad if the guard on duty can't help someone and just watches.
these advanced courses are offered at the hospitals too right. i only ever heard of the basic courses.
yep very true ive had a few occasions to call an ambulance over the years ..heres a few tips
arm or limb through a glass window..
have the patient sit down , in the case of lacerations from glass check for any foreign bodies first, hold the limb upright. calm the patient down, glass maybe present in the skin so just loosely wrap in a towel and sit the patient down holding arm/limb upright until paramedics arrive...do not apply pressure to a wound that may contain glass!!
fore head through a glass window.... if ur child should fall through a glass window ( because some moron doesnt have saftey glass in their front door) and has a large sheet of glass trapped behind the skin of his forehead and all the skin has been sliced off... then... call an ambulance immediately sit the patient down, again do not apply pressure simply keep the eyes free from blood so the patient doesnt freak out, and wait for the paramedics in the case of the head with the glass being so close to the brain its best to wait for the experts to remove it ... just keep the patient calm till help arrives.
( and if the said people who didnt have safety glass in their door and who caused ur son to go through 3 hours of plastic surgery to have his head sewn back together send u a bill for a new glass stuff it down their throat and tell them thank God he wasnt killed )

A caution about safety glass, some types are not possible to break at all, and if you are trapped in a house fire and need to break a window to get out, you need breakable windows. The best type of glass is like car windscreen glass, that when it breaks it shatters into little balls.

hmm yeah true teoma this is probably useful
where can u do such first aid courses neway? is it commonly available?
as for falling thru glass, i did this in my grandmas house wen i was a bit younger, my head went thru a glass door.. but i was completely fine i didnt even get cut  alhamdulillah lol
im tryign to get on a first aid course thru work, inshallah they accept me cos they normally only let u do them if its necessary for your job
Most colleges offer first aid courses that are more advanced(at least here anyway) A lot of jobsites here require 1 person with level 3(paramedic level) per 30 workers so a lot of the colleges offer it as it can be the difference between getting a job and not getting one.
alhumdulillah my manager has approved for me to go on a 3-day first aid course.
Is their any rulings for muslim women to do first aid on men? cos its not like a doctor nurse thing, u could end up doing first aid for a memeber of the public if your around, just curious
If you are the most qualified person present then I remember reading a fatwa saying that it is permissable if there is no other option just as if there is no other doctor available then a man it is alright for a woman to see him if it's life or death

I think the preservation of life is more important than pretty much any other consideration.
If a life is in danger, and you're the best qualified, put aside the inhibitions!
Most scholars agree as well.
I wish they'd make First Aid and defibrillator training compulsory!

If someones life is in danger, then that is the first consideration. Its the same as if someones life is in danger and the only doctor is the opposite sex, or if you are trapped in a burning building without hijab/jilbaab and only a non mahram man who can rescue you. Also the same as if you were starving and the only food is pork. (the latter being a frequent question of non Muslims in dawa situations lol...the Qur'an says "if you are forced by necessity with no desire to transgress...")
There are lots of fatwas on this principle of preservation of life, the situation varies from fatwa to fatwa but the principle is the same.
I'd check with a scholar (once you have done the first aid course, obviously there is no time once you are in the situation!) for non life threatening stuff like nosebleeds and sticky plaster stuff - but I don't see why for minor stuff like this you can't just advise without having any physical contact.
