View Full Version : Songs for Zion

Although this will likely go over like a lead balloon, to borrow the ol' cliche.
I believe it would be beneficial (even if unwelcome) to share the other perspective: the Jewish love for Zion, the Holy Land, the Promised Land, our homeland Eretz Yisrael.
Long before Mohammed....
Long before Jesus....
...the Hebrews have love the Land Promised to them by G-d, Blessed be His Name.
When famine drove the Israelites to Egypt, the love of the land stayed in their hearts, their prayers, their dreams.
After four centuries as slaves in Egypt, HaShem (the Lord G-d) redeemed Israel and His Servant Moses tempered the slave spirit out of them in the Wildernesses of Sinai, embued them with the spirit of Torah (G-d's Revelation given the world at Mount Sinai), and guided them to the Promised Land--though Moses himself was forbidden to enter it. The Land was reclaimed by G-d's command from the peoples who had settled it in the Israelites' absence, and the land was sanctified in His Name. His servants David prepared and Solomon built His Holy Sanctuary in Jerusalem, and the people dwelt nigh His Presence (Shekinah) for centuries.
Conquerors came: Assyria, Egypt, Babylon, Persia, Rome, Byzantines, Muslims....
And yet, wherever dispersed the Jews never forgot Zion, their home, nor Yerushalayim, their holiest city, not though millenia passed, not though assimilation (be it as Christian or Muslim) would save them from persecution, not though their mere existence was reason for some to murder them en masse--man, woman, and child.
These are our songs....
Respectfully,

By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion.
Upon the willows in the midst thereof we hanged up our harps.
For there they that led us captive asked of us words of song, and our tormentors asked of us mirth: 'Sing us one of the songs of Zion.'
How shall we sing the Lord'S song in a foreign land?
If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning.
Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, if I remember thee not; if I set not Jerusalem above my chiefest joy.
Remember, O the Lord, against the children of Edom the day of Jerusalem; who said: 'Rase it, rase it, even to the foundation thereof.'
O daughter of Babylon, that art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that repayeth thee as thou hast served us.
Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the rock.

A Psalm of the sons of Korah; a Song. His foundation is in the holy mountains.
the Lord loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.
Glorious things are spoken of Thee, O city of God. Selah
'I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon as among them that know Me; behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this one was born there.'
But of Zion it shall be said: 'This man and that was born in her; and the Most High Himself doth establish her.'
the Lord shall count in the register of the peoples: 'This one was born there.' Selah
And whether they sing or dance, all my thoughts are in Thee.

For the Leader; with string-music. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.
In Judah is God known; His name is great in Israel.
In Salem also is set His tabernacle, and His dwelling-place in Zion.
There He broke the fiery shafts of the bow; the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah
Glorious art Thou and excellent, coming down from the mountains of prey.
The stout-hearted are bereft of sense, they sleep their sleep; and none of the men of might have found their hands.
At Thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, they are cast into a dead sleep, the riders also and the horses.
Thou, even Thou, art terrible; and who may stand in Thy sight when once Thou art angry?
Thou didst cause sentence to be heard from heaven; the earth feared, and was still,
When God arose to judgment, to save all the humble of the earth. Selah
Surely the wrath of man shall praise Thee; the residue of wrath shalt Thou gird upon Thee.
Vow, and pay unto the Lord your God; let all that are round about Him bring presents unto Him that is to be feared;
He minisheth the spirit of princes; He is terrible to the kings of the earth.

A Song of Ascents. When the Lord brought back those that returned to Zion, we were like unto them that dream.
Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing; then said they among the nations: 'The the Lord hath done great things with these.'
the Lord hath done great things with us; we are rejoiced.
Turn our captivity, O the Lord, as the streams in the dry land.
They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.
Though he goeth on his way weeping that beareth the measure of seed, he shall come home with joy, bearing his sheaves.

For the mountain of Zion, which is desolate, the foxes walk upon it. Thou, O the Lord, art enthroned for ever, Thy throne is from generation to generation.
Wherefore dost Thou forget us for ever, and forsake us so long time?
Turn Thou us unto Thee, O the Lord, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.

History

Zion, wilt thou not send a greeting to thy captives, Who greet thee as the remnant of thy flocks?
From West to East, from North to South, a greeting,
From far and near, take thou on all sides.
A greeting sends the captive of desire, who sheds his tears Like dew on Hermon; would they might fall on thy hills.
I am a jackal mourning your affliction, and when I dream,
I dream of the return of your captives;
I am a lyre accompanying your songs.
My heart yearns for Bet-El, for Peniel, and Mahanayim, to meet your pure one there,
Where the Divine Presence was your neighbor, and your Creator.
Open your gates to face the gate of Heaven,
Where the glory of G-d alone was your light,
The sun, moon, and stars hiding theirs.
I would wish my soul to be poured away
Where the spirit of G-d drenched your sons.
The house of royalty you are, the throne of G-d.
How can slaves sit on the seats of the mighty?
What I would give to traverse those places
Where G-d was revealed to your seers and messengers!
Who will make me wings so I can fly away
And take my broken heart to your mountain clefts?
Let me fall prostrate upon your land, treasure your stones,
And caress your fine dust.
And yet, as I stand by my fathers' graves,
Your most precious tomb will astound me in Hebron,
Let me pass through your woods and fields,
And stand in Gilead,
Marvelling at the Mount of Avarim.
The Mount of Avarim, and the Mount of Hor,
Where the two great lights are,
To guide you and illuminate you.
The air of your land is the soul's very life,
Your clouds of dust flowing myrrh, and liquid honey your streams.
It would sooth my soul to walk naked and barefoot
Upon the desolate ruins that were once your sanctuary,
On the place of your ark, now concealed, and the spot
In the holy of holies where your cherubim dwelt.
I shall shear my locks and cast them away, cursing
The time when your saints were profaned in an unclean land.
How can I eat and drink in equanimity when I see
The dogs dragging your lions down?
Or how can the light of day be sweet to my eyes
When I see ravens' beaks picking your eagles' bones?
Slowly, O cup of sorrow, slacken now a little,
For my soul and body are replete with bitterness.
When I remember Ohalalh I drink your wrath;
When I recall Oholivah, I drain your dregs.
Zion, beauty's perfection, who have enwrapped yourself in love and grace,
The souls of your companions are bound to you.
They delight in your peace, mourn
Your desolation, bewail your destruction.
From their pit of captivity they aspire towards you.
Bow, each in his place, towards your gates.
They are the flocks of your people, exiled and scattered
Through hill and valley, and yet they remember your folds.
They cling to your robes, and strive
To climb up and clasp your palms' top branches.
Can Shinar and Patros compare with you in majesty?
Can their vain magic compete with your Urim and Tummim?
Your anointed ones, your prophets, your Levites,
And your singers are beyond all parallel.
The crown of idolatrous kingdoms will entirely perish,
But your strength is forever, your diadem endures for days on end.
Your G-d desires to dwell with you, and happy is
The man to go and settle in your courts.
Happy is he who hopes to come and see
Your light rise, and your dawns break over him.
To see the happiness of your chosen, and to exult
In your joy, as you live youth's first vigor once more.

My heart is in the East, and I am in the depths of the West.
My food has no taste. How can it be sweet?
How can I fulfill my pleasures and my vows?
When Zion is in the power of Edom, and I in the fetters of Arabia?
It will be nothing to me to leave all the goodness of Spain.
So rich will it be to see the dust of the ruined sanctuary.

Hatikvah (The Hope)
As long as deep in the heart,
The soul of a Jew yearns,
And forward to the East
To Zion, the eye looks
Our hope will not be lost,
The hope of two thousand years,
To be a free nation in our land,
The land of Zion and Jerusalem.

And there are many many more.
But I share the songs of the heart for Zion, that have poured from the Jewish soul down the many many centuries, are no less sincere and heartfelt as the current Palestinian desire for a homeland of their own.
It is only when there is mutual recognition and appreciation of both Israeli/Jewish and Palestinian souls for the land and its historic peoples (ancient and modern) that the Path to a true and lasting peace for both Palestinian and Israeli children will be achieved.
I pray this day comes soon.
Many blessings,

"Ed-daar daar aboona wajo el-ghorob yeT-Hoona."
If olive trees knew
who planted them lovingly with care
that when their beauty unfolded
their oil would have tears to bear:crying:
The heart of Palestine triumphs
unbroken by what others do
But only God and He alone
has the power to deliver you
We keep you in every prayer
asking, you be spared more sorrow
The yesterdays that made you strong
give you courage now and tomorrow.
