this should not have happened unless you accidentally deleted the file that stores the bookmarks on the system, or you create a new profile and you started to use the new profile.
This same thing once happened to me too, but I unfortunately couldn't recover it. You should have tried to re-run the firefox browser while it was already running in the background and wasn't responding.
I am glad you brought that up actually, because I would like to learn how to recover that, too..
I hope you'll be fine

Walikum Salaam
I use to get that too...Best thing to do is save the bookmarks by clicking on Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks > Export (I think!)
Or just use FirefoxPortable (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable) <---Just download and extract it somewhere

This is a well known problem. Read this:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks
try this
go to c drive
documents and settings
administrater
application data
mozilla - profiles - inside there should be a folder called bookmark back up.

I tried it , & all I see is this:
Bookmarks
Get Bookmark Add-ons
Bookmarks Toolbar Folder
Add bookmarks to this folder to see them displayed on the Bookmarks Toolbar
