Your only a graduate once! I will most definitely be going to mine! :D, I prolonged my degree to accommodate my placement so I'm graduating next year! :(, One more year of uni!, (well 3 more years of study the thereafter :p)
I didnt go, i sat in the audience. i didnt see the point, my degree didnt mean much to me, but it really upset my parents afterward beceause it meant alot to them :(
have you spoken to them about it?
I would definately go and put needles on top of the hats, so when they get thrown in the air..they come back falling down and...:D

this is exactly how i feel. Inshallah im applying for the course that i deep down really want to do again for the second time this year- if i get accepted onto that course then i'd deffo go to the graduation!!
However, if i dont, then im stuck doing clinical science and to be honest it means nothing to me- i did not work hard all my life through high school to do clinical science at university :s *sighs*
Al-Qadr...im suggesting you go to your grauduation- like someone said, it only comes once and it's deffo an experience you can share with your fellow graduate friends..and ofcourse inshallah your children in the future.
Asked mum, she said its upto me. did U regret it tho? not going thru the ceromony?

on a personal level i never regretted it as i didnt bother with the 2nd graduation either..but mum kept going 'ai hai, all the other kids had graduation' and didnt let me forget it for months so i felt bad for her. if your mums kool with it, dont bother.
i had no muslims on my course, no commonality with any one of them.
to me it representing nothing at all, but its a personal choice. Do your istikahara :)
One of the reasons, perhaps from Eemaan's post, is that maybe you feel socially inept in regards to going to the ceremony? Do you have friends? Are you shy?

Shy - Extremely :o , friends in uni kinda I spose. But they wouldnt care if I come or not.
Well I hope these words help. The thing with graduation is that hardly anyone takes notice of anyone else because they're focused on themselves, close friends, and family. Once you go there, go there early so you have more time to get used to your surroundings and feel comfortable.
The only part where you will be involved is like 5 seconds long and then the focus is immediately on the person behind you to get their documentation/certificate.
It's 5 seconds of your life, it should be a proud day for you and your achievement. I'm sure your family, especially those who never go the chance to go to University, would love to see their girl on the stand collecting hers :o
what if u have to shake a mans hands????
unis are usually informed on this...
auroscopic make sure you tell Imran khan (yes the cricketer) not to shake your hand :smack:
what if u have to shake a mans hands????
She can speak to him before-hand (pardon the pun) and let him know of this. He won't be bothered or offended as its her religious duty, not a personal thing.

I didn't go because my uni was asking for a ridiculous amount of money for tickets, I mean we didn't even get one complimentary ticket or something for parents to attend! I thought it was a huge waste of money with the hiring of gowns, pics, travelling across to the other side of London to pick up a piece of paper lol... instead we saved our cash and went to Syria for 5 weeks :D Money well spent I say :D

its nice going to graduation - its a last chance to see loadsa ppl u'll probs either never see again or see very rarely.
The only thing I was worried about when it came to my graduation was whether i'd have to shake a man's hand... but Alhumdulillah our uni's chancellor was a women so no issues there.
Find out b4 its a man or a woman and if its a man.. make sure u inform ur uni in advance u will not shake a man's hand.

true, if ur robe thing is black then go with black or something along those lines, not something funky like orange with pink flowers on it or something.
ours was in blue so i just wore a navy blue hijaab and it looked great where as my freinds wore yellowish beige and stuff and i must say, the navy blue looked better with the blue than yellow beige with the blue

I went to my HND graduation ceremony cos' I got on well with a lot of people on my course and it was our way of seeing each other off. I didn't bother going to my degree graduation ceremony because I didn't have any close friends on that course so I wasn't bothered about not seeing any of them again. Besides, by the time I did my degree I was taking Islam more seriously and remembered at my HND ceremony people were drinking champagne. The main advantage of going to the HND ceremony was getting a graduation photo to please my parents:p

Question:
Is participating in graduation ceremonies haraam?
Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.
If the graduation ceremony included disobedience, it becomes haram to attend or witness. Some of the common disobedience that takes place in these ceremonies: Music and the marching of the graduates to it; Uncovered women and mixing with men; the graduation dress which is in imitation of disbelievers (such as church dress). And Allaah knows best.

its haraam? at my twins ceremony, the boys sat on one side and the girls on the other side. they are not sitting together and they wear different colored caps and gowns. one thing about the cap and gown, its modest. it covers everything.
i am proud of my kids..i went and so did they. you dont have to stick around afterwards, go home with your family and do your own special thing, go out to dinner. invite some of your muslim family and friends to attend the ceremony. when they call your name to go and get your diploma, let your family shout: Allahu Akbar!!!! :D
everyone else celebrates and shouts out what they want. i say, make it your own day!! you and your family have reason to be proud of your accomplishments.
(if i am telling you to do haraam, then dont listen to me. its not my intention to misguide you)

I wasn't looking forward to it really, didn't even think about it.. but loved it on the day, it was cool wearing the gown and cap.. you feel like yay, this is cool :D ..and I think it was nice for me mum and dad :) [even tho my degree classification was not all that impressive sadly!]
Go, you spent all that time in uni, why not go to the graduation ceremony and celebrate your achievement  ..I think it's nicer for our parents, esp considering all the money, support, etc they put into our lives and our educations, it makes them happy to see it take fruit :)
The only thing I was vaguely worried about what the dude trying to shake me hand.. but unis are quite clued up on this, and mine seemed used to having people not want to do this for religious or other reasons.. and even had a protocol for it.. keep your sides to your side and the VC will know not to try and shake it.. and instead just congratulate you etc :D ..so all was cool

I think u was lookin at the wrong person in the mirror *outta*
I got my graduation pack on fri and to be honest I was in two minds about whether to attend or not - the main thing I was worried about was the shaking hands thing but from reading the previous posts I think I should be able to get this sorted...once I figure out who to inform...what happens if they forget though? do I just refuse to shake hands on stage while being filmed (the whole thing is recorded and u buy the dvd afterwards lol) - because that's exactly what I'll do!!! Has anyone been through this and got through it ok?
Just one small question though - how do they order giving out the degree certificates - is it everyone who got a first goes first then 2.1 and so on? or is it lowest first? and do they announce it or something? (tbh I havnt done that great :o and dont really want some announcement for it :o ) It just says in my info pack about groups for the different bits in physics like Physics with astrophysics, physics with finance etc ...and I think I'm the only one who's the Physics with medical physics student - do they divide it according to that? I dont really wanna be all alone but I'm usually on my own in lectures lol so I guess its ok. I know I'll regret it if I dont go so I wanna sort out details and know what to expect beforehand.

i had mine in January, and they asked the hijaabis beforehand if they minded shaking hands, then they go and tell the guy you're supposed to shake hands with that this person doesn't want to shake hands :p
and they don't call out you're degree grade they just call you up by you're course alphabetically
one word of advice, don't take you're parents with you, they'll embarrass you :rotfl:

there is no 1:1 :p
ther's
first class
2:1
2:2 (they both second class degree 2:1 is higher though)
Third Class
and then there is Pass which i'm not sure if it actually counts as a degree
We were given a book with everybody's name's in it and the people that had a first class degree had a little star next to their name, their wasn't many of those though :p
and BTW when they start their long speeches on Allah knows what they were talking about it's really boring
you should just go and get you're pictures taken and collect you're certificate and tell them you can't stay for ceremony because the ceremony is actually really boring

my parents will want to come. I know the ceremony will prob be deadly boring but I wanna go just for the sake of it.
