are you responsible for the sins of your children ?

someone said to me the other day that we would be thrown in hell because his children are not practicing Muslims ?

is this true and if so where is it written in the Quran or Hadiths ?

Children (IMO) are exempt from sins (unless there's evidence via Hadith or the Holy Quran to suggest otherwise).

If the child for example doesn't read their Salaat or Fast etc... (and they've reached the age of puberty), then the blame will be on him/her (the child).

There is a Hadith where the Prophet (saw) has asked to teach Salaat to our children at the age of 7 :

Hadith - Dawud, Narrated As-Saburah

The Prophet said: Order your children to pray at the age of seven. And beat them [lightly] if they do not do so by the age of ten. And separate them in their bedding.

no person bears the burden of anothers sins, but our duty as a parent ana wether we did it to the best of our ability to guide our children will be looked at by allah swt , so we as parents from day one, have to do evrything in our power to try and bring them back onto the right path if they have gone astray...i.e. our duty as a parent doesnt stop when they turn 18yrs old.

May allah swt guide all our children on the right path ameen.
