Bringing It Home
Date: Thursday 12th April 2007
Time: 9.30 am – 1.00 pm
Venue: Toynbee Hall, 28 Commercial Street, London, E1 6LS
Demos is an independent think tank and research institute. We work with a range of organisations - from government departments and charities, to schools, companies and local authorities. In 2006, Demos produced a report on the role that communities can play in counter-terrorism and security – Bringing it Home: Community-based Approaches to Counter-terrorism. It argued that communities need to be recognised as an essential part of the strategy to tackle terrorism and violent extremism, but that their role needs to be based upon trust rather than suspicion from the authorities.
The aim of this seminar is to present our findings, talk to local people and community leaders about their own experiences, get feedback on our analysis and conclusions, and discuss together the next steps for action and research. This is a chance for people to give their thoughts on the recommendations in the report, make criticisms, and suggest how these ideas could be taken forward in practice. We will collate the conclusions from the seminar and feed them back to the Government. This is not a government exercise, but because of its support for the report it is likely to listen closely to what the discussions produce. All input will be given on a confidential basis, to ensure that everyone feels able to speak honestly and openly.
The seminar aims to bring together a wide cross-section of the community, both Muslim and non-Muslim, different nationalities and local leaders. Your participation is needed to make this a success. If there are people you think should be part of this, whose voices wouldn't normally be raised or heard, do let us know. Following the seminar, there will be lunch and we will be finished in time for Zhuhr prayers. If you require creche facilities please let us know. We appreciate that this is short notice but we would like you to contact us as soon as possible to confirm your attendance.
