I don't buy many books, only one or two good Islamic ones. Like biography of prophet Muhammed s,a.w and biography of Khalid bin Waleed. I usually borrow them from the library. They have loads of Islamic books but they mostly written by Shia authors..
At the moment im reading Islam in Andalus by Ahmed Thomson.. almost finished it.gd book.

i wouldn't really trust public libraries for learning about the deen...they tend to be written by people who are not even muslim or from deviated sects. Like with anything if you want something good quality go to a specialist mashAllah Regents Park Masjid and the Dar ul salam bookshop in Walthamstow (N.E) London have good a relativiely affordbale books and other reputable organisations
i absolutely love books, and i love buyign them, i dont read more than one at once cos i feel it hinders u taking in what ur reading , if u are reading more than 1 book at a time.

i like to read one at a time cos i like making time for only one book.
i love reading books it just takes me to my own world, i forget everyone, dont hear anyone and only come back to reality when my brain realises iv been reading so long i neglected my stomach :p
i tend to re-read islamic books more then 3 times because im always referencing things or just reading to certify it within myself.
as for normal non fiction books, if it is a really good book i might read it twice but chances of that arent much.
yeah im a book reader..
but right now im lacking..too busy :p
yes ivebought books..still in my drawers..not read:smack:

Same here. I love books.
But the thing is that I read while laying down, which has had a toll on my eyesight.
Aaahh love books! dont ever take me into a bookstore (especially an islamic bookshop) you just wont get me out of there :D
Alhamdullilah ive read some great reads... i ermm have a terrible habit of reading more than one book at a time though  infact sometimes im reading more than 2 or 3 in one go (but some are fiction so not all islamic and not all difficult reads).
I tend to finish them too- dont like leaving them half read unless they really do bore me! lol.I bought a book called "Milestones" by Sayyid Qutb yesterday :D

Na'am same here- only bad habit is I read like 3-4 books at the same time so its like a mishmash of reading of all kinds on varied and differing topics piled up :p some chapters of this, a paragraph of that, and a few more pages of this one and even some stuff on PDF/ Word or Net.
I do eventually finish them alhamdulillah before moving on- books are second only to cats and kittens :meow: but are ace alhamdulillah.

I do options two and three. There is stuff I know so I but the book and just read the small bit I wanted the book for, other books I read cover to cover. I have never really looked at how many books I read at once. That’s a good question actually I will trry to find out for my self now. Hmmmm….

how cool...a thread on reading habits..
I love reading books...they're like so da bomb!:D
I read a variety of books-novels, sel help, almanacs, comedy, biographies and many factual books.
I definately agree with option 2...i read like 2-3 books at once. 2 at least gotta be like very defferent to each other (helps to prevent confusion:)) and most of the time i read them cover to cover. But i gotta admit looks can be decieving at times.

not necessarily, books in the dewey code of 297 are all Islam related books...
stock is ordered from Muslim bookshops-Muslim publishers and ordered by Muslim members of staff.
The questionable books are published by the western publishing compaines which are written by orientalists, refuseniks and whatnot thats why it's important to read about the background of the author before reading the book.

i hate to read and the only time wen i read is wen i need to for research assignments or sumthing

a friend of mine wanted to donate some books to a local library cos it was full of books by orientalists and kuffaar, and they wouldnt allow it and said they would have to review all the books and they may have to be binned, and they were all mainstream books with ISBNs and published by legit people, yet there were rows and rows of books written by kuffaar full of their anti Islamic bias and yet they didnt want to have books about Islam written by muslims on the shelves.
Internet is villion of peace which has replaced habit of book reading :(

Mmm, They usually say that about all books which are donated,-unless the book is well known/on high demand and has already been catalogued and exists on the system. If the library staff are Non-Muslim-it's most likely they don't have any connections with Muslim book Publishers...and unfortunately the book lists that come through for them to order are by well known kuffar publishers who only publish that sort of stuff.
If they have any Muslim staff approach them instead..or what you could do is ask for them to order certain kitaabs from other libraries and it will cost them to order and transport it for you..eventually they'll feel inclined to buy them because it's costing them too much.

For some reason, I was banned by the mods under another alias. Don't know why, but I'm back. THis banning thing is a huge pain in the a$$. Anyway, I was content with harassing that racist a-hole piece of swine, AbuMubarak, but now, I'm really annoyed with ummah.com in general. Anyway, this forum is way too easy to get into so don't even bother banning me. I have a dozen+ aliases as it is so don't waste your time.
So please be nice and respectful and I promise to do the same and not disrupt the forum. I will, however, continue to call the swine AbuMubarak on his disgusting racism and bigotry.
Respectfully,

I love books and am a speed reader. A 400 page book is about 2-3 hours for me to read. It would take less time but I have kids...lol. The only book I don't speed read is the Quran.
Right now I have been reading mainly Islamic Books and non-fiction. I read sci-fi/fantasy for pleasure every once in a while.

Nothing can beat books for me, I read several at once when it comes to factual books, but for fiction I go cover to cover then on to next book.
I read at least 4 fiction books a week in between all the factual books about religion, and history or politics lol, psychology and philosophy.
Need to buy a good shelving system so that I can display my collection to its fullest. :D
TV is bleh, people are meh, books are yeah.

I love books, and I'm addicted to them. I find it difficult to go to bookstores and come out empty handed. If I was filthy rich, I would collect and collect all kinds of books and build a huge private library, to share with serious students.
It's juist awesome that the first word that Allah revealed to the Prophet (SAW) was "Read". I love to read!

Books are my ultimate weekness; if I see a good book I HAVE to buy it. There is so much knowledge and stuff contained in books that I feel I am missing something by not reading everything. I have this weird habit of re-reading books and becoming attached to the some of the characters. Then I see real people and compare them to my book people.....

muslims once used to have the largest libraries in the world and they used to read a lot, but look at their (our) conditions now.
Salaam,
I tend to read books all at once.
Often not in order, so little bits from here and there.
When i do read from front I never seem to reach the end, and the book just lies there. (the same used to happen when I played computer games. Just stop playing before the end completely satisfied with that.)
Mix of islamic, academic, non-fictional, semi-fictonal (sophie's world). But I don't like pure fiction unless its got a point...i dunno.
