Am I right in thinking this? That muslims cannot marry christians. i know that the marriage would not be recognized. Please shed some light on this with sunnahs or quran verses or both inshallah. thanks :D

They can, Muslim men can marry the people of the book.
certainly they can marry women from the people of the book, some people today try to claim that they cannot because the christians of today commit shirk but of course they were committing shirk at the time of the revelation of the Quran which is very very clear from the ayats.
Ibn umar asked the same thing and he said "we have been permitted to marry women from the people of the book but i know of no greater shirk than the one who says Isa is their lord" however indeed they have been made permissible for the muslim men.
although marrying the women of the people of the book has strict conditions about those women as Allah ta ala says in the Quran they must be chaste women that means they cannot be women who have had boyfreinds, or women who have had illicit relationships with men in the past, they must be chaste practising christians and jews.
(but tell me where u are going find one of those today, its pretty rare )
We are Permitted to Marry People of the Book who are Chaste and do not Do Shirk...
Al-Quran, Chapter 2 : Verse 221

Nor marry (your girls) to unbelievers until they believe: A man slave who believes is better than an unbeliever, even though he allures you. Unbelievers do (but) beckon you to the Fire. But Allah beckons by His Grace to the Garden (of bliss) and forgiveness, and makes His Signs clear to mankind: That they may celebrate His praise. "
Those among the People of the Book who Say Trinity and believe that Jesus(pbuh) is God or their Saviour are Clearly committing Shirk!
We cannot Marry them!
Al-Quran, Chapter 5 : Verse 72

and I'm sure everyone knows that Trinitarians Commit Shirk Regularly...
There are Among the Jews and Christians a small minority who Believe in One God Unseen Allah, Who do not commit Shirk...
Al-Quran, Chapter 3 : Verse 110

"Ye are the best of peoples, evolved for mankind, enjoining what is right, forbidding what is wrong, and believing in Allah. If only the People of the Book had faith, it were best for them: among them are some who have faith, but most of them are perverted transgressors."
Who are those who have Faith?
those who don't commit Shirk and are described in the Following Verses...
Al-Quran, Chapter 3 : Verse 199

Verse 113 : "Not all of them are alike: Of the People of the Book are a portion that stand (For the right): They rehearse the Signs of Allah all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration."
Verse 114 : "They believe in Allah and the Last Day; they enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong; and they hasten (in emulation) in (all) good works: They are in the ranks of the righteous."
Verse 115 : "Of the good that they do, nothing will be rejected of them; for Allah knoweth well those that do right."

But think of it this way - would you want your spouse to go to Hell forever?
Marry a Muslim.

there is an obvious Reason for this...
If a Muslim WOman was to marry a Christian/Jew, sher beliefs would be Mocked by the Jew or Christians and Muhammed(pbuh) if Christian, or Jesus(pbuh) as well both of whom will be labelled as 'Imposters' by the Jews/Christians...

Whereas if a Muslim brother Married a Non-Mushrik Jew or Christian, we won't be mocking any of the Prophets of God and Will invite her to accept Islam.
the other way round the Sister will Not want to accept False teachings of Christianity/Judaism, so an eternal conflict of Beliefs will exist...
and Allah knows Best why else...
