You can't reason it down to 'yes it's true' or 'no its not', but the Prophet SAW told us to choose names with good meanings...so that must've been for a reason.
But i like to think it does....my name means Jannah :D
one javed could be a doctor
another javed could be a engineer
yet another one could be a pious person
or even could be a theif

yes that is why the prophet (SaW) said do not name ur children with harsh names....
and believe me one brother found out to his detriment when he named his kid hadeed :smack:

na'am - give them beautiful names :)
but changing one's name when the former name's been "found" to be too heavy for the name-bearer..? how much of truth does that [heavy-name-change-name] hold ?
anyone?
[by the way - am not talking about pre and post-Islam name-changing here]
it does... my name has no meaning!!! :coolbro:am sure your name has a meaning  however trivial... :outta:
[ok ok..i was kiddin :D]
:dmashaAllah :D

it does not have any bearing on the personality . many name them after Prophets pbut all do they become even fraction of their personality .
name is just a label for identification purpose but it's important to keep islamic names to be identified as muslims .

mashaAllah :D
I was joking ukhti, I'm far from perfect.:o
I believe for most people it does. might not for everyone..
e.g. the name abbas. it means desciption of a lion. ive seen loads of brothers with this name and they r hard. there like lions. tough..
Also look at the prophet muhammed s.a.w name.. His name means the most praiseworthy.we say S.A.W whenever we mention his name.

because i've had at least 2 people amongst my relatives who changed their names because their old names were too heavy for their being :S
now my naphew's name been changed from Abd'Allah to Emraan...apparently the former being too heavy a name for him - he's been really sick...so a name change would perhaps [?] ease :S his bad health
i don't know too, hence why i'm posting - change name because it's too strong for you and affecting your health adversely?

..And how would a name such as Abdullah affect someones health.. I know some abdullahs and there health seems fine MashaAllah..
I think that scenario is taking the concept too literally.

have the parents and grandparents spoken to an imam, because if the imam said so then there is a valid reason (which the imam will have given)
...but if it's because they want a more preferred name the whole "heavy name" thing might be a superstition they follow but Alahu'Alam.

i've no idea if an imam was consulted
but it came as a shock...could be they just wanted to change the name [which my parents really love]
but Allah knows the Best, na'am

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesnt.
Some people have said that the effect of my name is apparent on my character but Im not so sure.
For definite with my youngest brother his name has effected him - mashaALLAH
and my other younger brother - his name also effects him to a less extent.

i guess all that matters in the end is > a good, meaningful Muslim name
Prophet :saw: has laid great emphasis on meaningful names
he :saw: changed the name of a sahabiya from Aasiya to Jameelah and the name of one of the Mothers of the Faithful from Barrah to Maimunah [r.a.]
so as long as the name's meaningful, personality doesn't matter ! :hidban: :D [ok i wasn't serious]
the personality too, should be a reflection of the person's name - a Muslim name...

I dont know about "heavy names" but definately we have to give good names, its a right the child has over his parents. I heard a narraton that someone had named his son something bad (i forgot the name though sorry) and the child was disobeying him. He went to complain about this to a person of knowledge and the person has replied "you did not give him his right of a good name, yet you complain when he does not give his right to you"
I like to give names which have a good personality behind them that the child can take as a role model, like Muhammad, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Bilal, Aisha, Khadijah, Fatimah, Mariam etc... because you can tell them about this person and make them feel a love for them, also the names with pleasant meanings is nice too
Not sure if names do influence personality, but they may begin to exhbits characteristics associated with the name purely through people focusing on those particular traits?
