Salaam everyone

Would taking part in a raffle be classsifed as being a haraam activity ?

If yes, what about just donating your cash instead of buying the tickets ?

And if someone did buy the tickets and won, would it be okay for them to donate the prize to charity ?

If to get the tickets you have to pay then yes, it is not allowed, as in essence it's another form of gambling.

Donating your cash to what? The charity? The school? The fund? Depends what they want it for - and if you aren't getting anything in return then I think you can just give . . ?

I did mention these very same questions to someone, and they more or less said what you're saying - that the taking part would be haraam even if you don't buy the tickets.

The reason I ask is because everyone was buying them (at my place of work), including some Muslims, and luckily for me, they said they'd come back later (and fortunately, they didn't).

I personally would have felt awkward in declining to buy the tickets - reason because there's a lot of questions to be asked (see my first post) so I wouldn't really know what to think.

Iceman, some would say the actual participance of the 'raffle' itself is haraam, regardless of the outcome (and what you intend to do with that 'outcome' if you win).

its a game of chance, in a raffle you can win a prize, whats the difference between this and a lottery? its not truly charity anyway if you have to have some reward for giving.

if you want to give to charity you can just put some money in the box and not get a raffle ticket.
