Na'am and here is Shaykh Mishari's Tala Badru version nasheed video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6200417476767355922 (http://video.google.com/videopla)
Here is the transliteration and translation to the original:
Tala'al-Badru 'alaynâ,
min thaniyyatil-Wadâ'
wajaba al-shukru 'alaynâ,
mâ da'â lillâhi dâ'
O the White Moon rose over us
From the Valley of Wada'
And we owe it to show gratefulness
Where the call is to Allah
Ayyuha al-mab'űthu finâ
ji'ta bi-al-amri al-mutâ'
Ji'ta sharrafta al Madînah
marhaban yâ khayra dâ'
O you who were raised amongst us
coming with a word to be obeyed
You have brought to this city nobleness
Welcome! best caller to God's way
Tala'al-Badru 'alaynâ,
min thaniyyatil-Wadâ'
wajaba al-shukru 'alaynâ,
mâ da'â lillâhi dâ'
O the White Moon rose over us
From the Valley of Wada'
And we owe it to show gratefulness
Where the call is to Allah

That's not the "oldest known song in history." Not even close.
Here's one that is 3400 years old:

Amazing!
But he did say "in THE history"... (of the Muslims????)
The Psalms of David/Dawuud, peace be upon him, are very old. The Bani Israel were very careful to label the psalms in the Book of Psalms in the Bible so that anyone can look and see which ones are believed to be those of David (lyrics only). Many of his psalms must be missing, because there are not many attributed to him, and it is quite clear that some of the psalms in the book of Psalms could not have been his because of their content.( He lived approx 1000-962 BC).
In there also is "By the Rivers of Babylon" that must have been composed between 597 -c 538 BC during the Babylonian captivity. Again, lyrics only.
I understand that there are some very, very ancient melodies amongst the Jews that have been passed down by sound from the Tribes of Israel of "The Old Testament" ie "BC."
Perhaps an expert on this can tell us more?
PS. I love the song when Prophet Muhammad, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, arrived at Madinah. I first heard it on the film "The Message".
