Women better drivers says watchdog

Women are better drivers than men according to the Advertising Standards Authority

Women are often accused to being bad drivers, but they should be reassured that this is generally not the case at all, following an Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruling. According to a new judgement from the ASA, women are better drivers than men.
Members of the public (it is not clear what sex they were) objected to a Diamond Car Insurance poster.
But the ASA rejected the complaints that the advert was not backed up with proof that women were better drivers than men.

Better drivers
The advert pictured a man in a hairdressing salon having his hair coloured, and stated: "Some men will try anything to get cheaper car insurance!"

"Diamond only do car insurance for women because women are better drivers."
In response to the complaint, Diamond Car insurance provided a range of statistics which proved that women are better drivers.

The ASA accepted its statistics, which showed that women had fewer accidents and smaller insurance claims than men.

Diamond provided 108 sample quotes from 12 competitors' websites which demonstrated that women were charged lower insurance premiums than men.

The ASA concluded: "In the context of the advertisement, readers were likely to interpret the claim to mean that women had fewer accidents and made fewer claims."

"The advertisers had substantiated the interpretation of the claim which was acceptable."

Women make better drivers as well

By David Millward, Transport Correspondent
Last Updated: 1:58am GMT 23/02/2007

The belief that women are worse drivers than men is still widely held, despite official figures showing that male motorists are a greater danger.
A survey by a road safety charity and car breakdown service published yesterday showed that most drivers were unaware that risk-taking men posed the greatest hazard.
Forty-six per cent believed men were more dangerous, while 42 per cent said there was little difference between the sexes. Eight per cent thought women were a greater menace.
advertisement

However, statistics produced by the Home Office last year showed that 97 per cent of motorists convicted of dangerous driving were male.
This, says a separate study by the Social Issues Research Centre, is because, while women are likely to make low-risk mistakes such as stalling at junctions, men are more prone to "thrill seek" or more likely to be convicted of speeding and drink driving.
Yesterday's survey, which was carried out by Brake and Green Flag among 1,009 drivers, found that only one in six realised the extent to which men were responsible for road fatalities.
Only 16 per cent of respondents said that more than 90 per cent of deaths by dangerous driving were caused by men.
Home Office statistics showed that 94 per cent of those convicted of causing death by dangerous driving were male.
"It's all about perception," said a Brake spokesman. "People think that women are as bad drivers as men, which is not what the statistics say."
The message, the spokesman added, was primarily aimed at young women who were particularly at risk if they got into a car with a boyfriend who was trying to make an impression.
A spokesman for AA motor insurance said: "At the beginning, up to the age of about 25, a young man is much more likely to kill or injure himself than a young woman.
"But as they get more experienced you find that there is little difference between men and women. By the time drivers reach the age of 40, they have the same risk profile as each other.
"The insurance industry is very sophisticated and we have accumulated a lot of data. We have found by the time motorists get into their 60s it is women who have become an increased risk and as a result their premiums are higher."
Transport Department figures show 7,591 male drivers were killed or injured in traffic accidents compared with 3,448 women in 2003.
In the following year the figure was 7,035 men and 3,366 women and in 2005 there were 6,529 male casualties and 2,968 female.

Men (or boys) just can't seem to face reality and accept they are totally lame in comparison to women. We do better than you in education, we're more creative, resourceful, we can multitask better, cope with stress better, deal with children and domestic things better, drive better..

But don't worry, we understand that male (misplaced) pride and egos make it difficult for those truths to be swallowed.

So carry on telling yourselves you are better at whatever, if it makes you feel better, we don't mind :)

Men and women cope with stress differently, in ways that benefit them. Women may cry or get angry or talk about it and usually feel better.

Men may busy themselves, distract, tackle the problem, or avoid it or go and let it out physically (sports or play a game on the PS2 :D )

So its a case of finding what works for you, theres no "better" or "best" way of doing things, as it varies from person to person.

What stress?

Lets make a simple comparison between mums and dads.. mums have FAR more stress to cope with.

Most men have one thing they contribute and stress about: financially supporting the family.. and half of them don't even do that properly without help from the wife!

Mums have to deal with the kids, the house, the cooking, the cleaning, looking after every single member of the household, dealing with all the kids problems, and often also providing an income..

I'm not saying this juste because i am female...seriously i've been in cars with men drivers and i have feared for my life!!! *eeek*

But i also have been in cars with women who were a bit shaky but that was because they were just starting out.

But in general i think it's women because of patience and being more alert..but i guess it depends on the individual

women definetly. men in their early 20's are the most dangerous road users, hence the much larger insurance costs.

having said that i did hear years ago that even though saudi arabia has banned women driving over 50% of all crashes are caused by women... make of that what you will... :D

women cause most of da accidents men jus end up crashin cos we try to avoid it :smack:

I cant belive this question was posted. I just was talking about it today. Well it depends some women drive really safe and some men have much more control over the car.

see thats waht i think

first when men drive..they suck. They try to show off and drive fast BUT they know they still need get control over that car

A women when she first drives, she drives calmly because she knows she has little control over the car.

When men start getting older they get better and more control.

when women start getting older they get more hyper. They think there sooo good and have so much confidence.

This only applies to "normal" drivers. Everyone has there one technique in driving so i cant really say if men or women are better.

salaams

i did not vote, cos i have seen all types of driving from both men and women.

my work mates say that i should be taken off the road cos of my driving but on the other hand i had trouble while trying to catch a woman in a race from work untill she got to a round about so i think men and women are the same.

both mad
