I am a lecturer as well a freelance translator and editor (English/Arabic). I live in Cairo and I am doing my Ph. D. on Qur'an translation.
I cannot specify one favorite sura but I love to listen to Ar-Rahman, especially by a magnificent Egyptian Qur'an reciter, the late Sheikh Muhammad Refaat. No one else is like him. I love to recite the last ayat of surat Al-Baqara and Al-Kahf. I love the hadeeth that indicates that Allah facilitate a path to Paradize to the one who pursues the path of learning.
I was referred to this forum by someone who said that I can find here a lot of people who may like to participate in my survey study on Qur'an translation.
As you know translations are indispensable for non-Arabic speakers who want to know about the basic rules of Islam - Muslims or otherwise - though the Qur'an in Arabic is unmatched and irreplaceable.
In my Ph.D. thesis, I am supposed to give some recommendations as to how translations should be done in order to achieve, as much as human capacity can bear it, fidelity, i.e. adhering to the original, as well as "fluency", readability.
Besides analyzing some aspects in seven of the most recent Qur'an translations, I am doing a survey study to investigate the expectations, needs and problems of non-Arabic speaking Muslims and non-Muslims in reading Qur'an translations. I have two forms, one for non-Arabic speaking Muslims and the other for non-Muslims. I have also a questionnaire for Imams about their experience with Qur'an translations.
I am so keen on knowing the opinion of as many brothers and sisters on their experience with Qur'an translations as possible. Those interested in participation in my study can contact me at dsabry2005@gmail.com and ask for the relevant form.
