The factors affecting the strength of an electromagnet

In this report I aim to investigate the affect of various factors affecting the strength of an electromagnet. I have chosen to investigate various factors rather than just one so that I can compare the affect of different factors affecting the electromagnet.

Electromagnets

Electromagnets do all the things that normal magnets do. The only difference is that you can switch them on and off. When a current flows through a wire a magnetic field is produced. The magnetic field from one wire is quite small. By putting lots of wires next to each other a much larger field is created. The easiest way to do this is by making the wire into a coil. The three factors which increase the strength of an electromagnet are:

1) A coil – This is made from several hundred turns of insulated copper wire.
2) A Battery – To supply current.
3) A Core – This is made from a soft magnetic material like iron off.
