What is the difference when you call allah such as the difference between saying 'ya allah' and 'ya allahu'. (i know ya allah means 'Oh allah ') or the difference between saying 'ya rab' and 'ya rabbu' ?

Ibn Sina

Nuttin really, Allah is his personal name and Rabb is one of his other names/attributes.

Allah is the best name from among Allah's 99 names; thus we should call upon Him with it. Saying 'Allahuma' is better than 'Ya Rab'. Rab can refer to the king of a country, or the leader of the family.

"Allahumma inni ad`uka bi asma'ika al-husna kulliha"

"O God, I invoke You with all of Your beautiful names."

(Narrated by Ibn Majah, book of Du`a; and by Imam Malik in his Muwatta', Kitab al-Shi`r)

Rabb means God/lord it's not one of Allah Subhanahu wa ta'aala's 99 names.

We've been through this before... there are problems with the ahadith that mention the 99 names since they're not consistent. So scholars have differed on the list, but also agreed on the fact that it's not that Allah has ONLY 99 Names. So any list, name that has been mentioned in a du'a by the prophet or in a ahadith or in the Quran should be fine.

Regarding the first poster's question.

In Arabic, there are certain gramatical marks at the end of words that mark if the word is used as a direct object, as a subject, after a preposition, etc.

So, depending in which position and what's the function of the word "Ar-Rabb", you can have "Ar-Rabba", "Ar-rabbu", or "Ar-rabbi".
So it's not that the word is different, it's simply a gramatical marker.

The only thing is that sometimes people say "Ya Rabbi", and what they mean here is "Oh My lord".

Also, if you make a stop, or a pause, like it's the end of the sentence, you don't need to put the end, so you can just say "Rabb", and it's fine.

Usually if you're uncertain of the gramatical mark, it's better to just ignore it than (and say "Rab") than saying the wrong mark (which cringes your ears!).

And Allah knows best.

ok, so from the list of 99 names, i can see the prefix's begining with 'A' e.g.
Al, Ar, As as Ar-Rahman etc, means 'The' as in the 'The merciful' etc. and when you say 'Ya' it means 'Oh' (as in Ya rahmanu - Oh Merciful) ?

so, if 'ya rahman' means 'oh merciful' then what does 'ya rahmanu' mean?

ya rahmanu means the same as ya rahman... but it sounds better for you to say just ya rahman if that is the end of ur sentence
